Has anyone attempted or succeeded in taking college classes online while otr trucking? Spending an hour a day on studies and school work is more than enough time for one college class a semester. There are audio books that can be listened while on the road (plus I have a friend who found a piece of software that can read pdf files to you), plus simple memorization exercises that can be done any time.
One of the many reasons I am getting into trucking is to pay for my ongoing lifelong education. Which would be great if it is something I can continue while OTR. Is one hour a day too much to ask for? Will the work load be too much to divvy out between trucking and one college class a semester? I'd like to hear your story if you have attempted online college classes while otr, or if you have any constructive non-caustic inputs to contribute as well.
Thanks in advance!

DeGuzzie Thanks this. -
You'll have more than an hour while they load you up or take it off.
I'd say go for it!!!
You will have more motivation to do better in class because you will live inside a constant reminder of what life will be like if you don't get educated. Then step outside that plastic prison and get asked for money from some bum and treated horrid by a fat white demi god she devil talking thru a window crack only after you knocked ferociously to get her attention for 180 contentious seconds.
If I read it right you are using trucking as a stepping stone to a better career or whatever you want to do.
Sure go for it. Just view the otr as a big vacation don't rush anywhere for anyone and if you see something you wanna go do or see. Then go do it. -
If you are only going to take one class, then you should be great. I would start off with engl comp 1301 (if you have not taken already) personally, at first I would avoid study heavy classes like history or psyc that require lots of reading and rereading). You have time while driving to think about the assignments and can write while being loaded, unloaded, breaks ect.. maybe get a voice activated recorder and dicate while driving when an idea hits you. If its safe. Sounds like a good use of your time to me. I'm finishing first semester now but stopped working all together to do full load. But I have military college benifits so its not as much a hardship as it may be on others. Sure miss driving, though, its crazy how much it gets into you.

Only issue is internet connection pay for WiFi at pilots loves etc. Most online schools won't accept 4g. Also need a laptop with windows 8 and Microsoft office.
-
Why won't they accept 4g?
-
4g is fine for every college I just looked at online for you (they recommend broadband but not mandated). Most of the things you do will not even be online. Getting the assignments, uploading your course work and viewing powerpoints videos and communicating with professors can all be done with 4g. When you do need faster speed for large essay papers, wifi is bloody everwhere now. If you need any help researching, let me know, happy to help.
DeGuzzie Thanks this. -
In the first 6 months, no you will not have the time or energy to be a serious student. Once you get your feet underneath you, try courisca (sp?). It's free so you have nothing to lose if you can't stay on schedule.
The biggest problem I had was not finding time, but finding consistent time. It always seemed like when I got into crunch time with school work would slam me, or I'd be someplace like Orehead, KY where there isn't WiFi and only limited cell data.DeGuzzie and omg-downshift! Thank this. -
I kind of took the ball and ran with this partly because I want to help out but really because I don't want to work on my research paper and this is my excuse. So here is the deal, Nirvana is correct about exclusive online schools and 4g. I called University of Phoenix and they in fact have very stringent internet as well as computer requirements. But I would not go through an online school to begin with if I was you. I would go through your local community college to get your two year degree (I am assuming you do not have an associates yet). The cost are generally lower and you have more academic flexibility in way of degree plans. I called the technology department at my school and asked if there are any requirements for internet speed, and was told that 4g is fine as long as it is reliable and consistent. I pulled up 100% online degree plans and there are several AAS and AA offered (no on campus testing). I then called my advisor and asked him what he thought of a trucker taking classes online (trying to find a way for you to not need to test out on campus). He said that you can enter one of the 100% online associates degree plans and take all the core classes from that degree plan that would be reciprocal in other degree plans. So all your english comps, math, ect... then if you decided down the road to switch to a different degree plan that require on campus classes or testing you simply hold off on classes than switch plans when you like, then you have all your cores done..online (yea!). so thats two years of classes you can take on the road, then switch if you like, to say a History major or basket weaving or whatever
, or you can look at a degree plan you want and just piece mill all the classes together (he said you do not have to take most classes in any order other than refresher courses). Also be advised, that most community colleges provide students Microsoft office free of charge to the student for up to 5 computers. (right on). I am not sure how far if at all you have gone in college, but if you have not gone at all you have to take an entrance placement exam (determines if you need remedial math, english ect..) unless you are prior military, than you are exempt from placement exams. These exams are good for a period of time, so take one as quick as you can on campus, cost is about 35 bucks I think, transfers to other colleges and will be done when you decide to go. My advisor also said that if there is any questions you have, shoot it to me, ill shoot it to him and back at you. They get all giggly and fall over them selves when non-traditional students go to school. (only meaning working stiffs going to school, not intelligence level). I guess because they get sick of dealing with 20 year olds, but that is a whole separate thread. I talked to my wife who has been researching schools for her doctorate, and she said she is not going to use an online only school at all, she is using a traditional college as they offer the same and more that the online schools do. But that is a doctorate and she had a hard time finding a school online that offers that level in what she wants. She also said no not under any circumstances fill out any form for online schools and provide a cell number. they will hunt you to the ends of the earth and never stop calling, she gets twenty calls a day from various schools. My last thing unless you ask for help, just advice really. I see that you are a trucking student, I thought at first you were an established driver. If you are anything at all like I was when I learned to drive, there is no room for supplemental education at the onset of your driving training and for a good period of time when solo for that matter. Trucking is an education unto itself, and I can say for me anyway, when I first started that my brain was full all the time from all the new stuff coming in. it took a while before I wasn't spending time not driving, getting ready to drive. If I was getting loaded, I was doing paperwork, or trying to figure out how to get point a to point b, making maps, taking notes and just trying to sleep. Spending off time in the back off the truck stop practicing backing, releasing I haven't showered in almost a week, feet hurt, hands hurt, eyes hurt, self doubt, self pity, cant sleep, have no idea what i'm doing, trying not to piss off the old timers, trying to get there on time, scheduling the next load, figuring out if Arkansas has cell service anywhere, if there is an actual road that goes around the mountains (there isn't by the way) get my drift? My point is if you are in fact new to driving, dedicate yourself at least at the onset, to learning this trade, because there is a whole lot to it. But, if I can offer anything else in the way of School, i'm on it. * Drops mic, walks off stage*
