My company has a pretty good system for retrieving stuck trucks. We send out a truck with a tug rope. He'll take your load (your money) so the stuck truck is now light and the rescuer is heavy. Then he'll hook up the tug rope and gun it. The stuck truck will slingshot out of the mud/snow.

I've had to off-load from a stuck truck before and it seemed sort of risky since the road was still very slick and muddy. I did make it out but we could have easily had two stuck trucks..haha. BTW, I got paid hourly (from the time I was diverted till I got back to where I was diverted from) and the load money (we get paid %) went to the other guy. I think I came out ahead since it was a short haul in the first place.

The reason they went to this is because the winch dispatch wasn't organized enough to keep one winch truck in the Stanley area working. There used to be a winch driver who lived south of Stanley that would come out and get you but management stopped letting him because he was getting too many hours. He quit because of it before I left that place. After that, the winch drivers that were sent out of the district complained too much about having to drop what they were doing and come back and save a stranded water driver. It wasn't soon after this that they put ropes on the double bottoms. I have dropped my pup and pulled trucks out of the mud before. What little extra that you make is not worth the stress of pulling someone out. If something happens, the driver pulling the empty truck out is going to have to be the one that answers all the questions and gets their safety bonus taken away.Last edited: Apr 13, 2015
Highway Hypnosis Thanks this. -
Where I'm working here in Alberta, we never chain up. If we get stuck on lease or on the lease roads and we're supposed to be there, we dont have to pay for anything. Getting stuck in the winter and around this time of the year with the ground being soft and muddy is very common. The farmers around here are contracted by our company to pull us out while were paid for the wait time for the tractor to get to us. Driving off the highway into a ditch would be a different story...
