That's great...I don't have one yet. Maybe I wasn't clear. I am a new student about to attend CDL school for the first time. I should be a regional driver based in Oklahoma after my initial OTR training. Would it be a waste of time and money to get a TWIC card? I guess there is a possibility that I could deliver to south TX and LA. Just don't know if I would deliver to ports.

Rail yards may ask for it.
RackEmUp Thanks this. -
Good to know. Thanks!

Chemical plants too, but I wouldn't get real excited about it. You get nothing for it on the maybe that you will catch a load requiring it. Much better for the carrier if you have it too. He can send you anywhere .......or is he paying the fee? ( $127.50 )
Good luck... -
Nah...I'm paying, but you're right...having the option might give me a load instead of someone else. Not really the mentality I want to put across, but miles are money.

I live on the west coast and have used a TWIC exactly one time. That was in a New York port and they were accepting $50 for some background if you did not have one. I don't know what kind of scam they were running but I had my TWIC. Other than that it has been a waste of money! No one ever looks at it or asks for it. Several employer's don't even know what it is even though they ask for it in their employment ads.
For example hen I worked for Swift I showed them my TWIC, they did not know what it was. They said they noted it on my profile however I was constantly prompted to get my TWIC card even though I told them every time I had one. None of their shippers asked for one: no rail lines at all. I seems like a waste of money unless you know you are going to need one even though it toke me only 3 days to get my first. -
If your in school I would start the process for hazmat ( $75 dollar no Refundable, TSA, FBI back ground checks) just so you can have the paper and the DMV is notified. I would also reccomend to wait until after getting your license to put the endorsement on. It's just more on the road test and at any point really that he can ask you questions and or have you stop at railroad tracks. I've heard guys doing that then they blow through the tracks and you fail.
As as far as twic goes, you might as well get it. $128 is not a lot of money and why restrict yourself on loads? If your going to pull Hazmat go to ports or secure goverment sites just get it. Who cares if you use it once or not. You still have it.RackEmUp Thanks this. -
A lot of employers in my area ( Georgia ) require that you have or in process of obtaining a TWIC.
RackEmUp Thanks this. -
Sorry, I don't know anything about how long it takes to get the card. But I have a bit of OCD and can't help myself here.
It's a TWIC. NOT a TWIC CARD. It stands for Transportation Worker Identification Card. Why do you use the word CARD twice? Just drives me even more batty
