Hey how's it going guys. Needless to say I'm a newbie, happy to say it (we all got to start somewhere, eh?), and it seems I've come to a point in my life which has allowed me to pursuit my dream of being a trucker. I've eye'd Prime for going on a couple of years now and I'm really thinking of contacting them for some information. I just thought I would start here first. I'll list my questions below and you guys can handle them as you wish.

    1. My local career center (glorified unemployment office) has informed me they will pay for my CDL training through a local community college if I can get a company to send them notification that they will take me on once I get my CDL's. Do you think Prime may do this for me?

    2. I'm located in eastern Kentucky, near the tip where I'm around 5-10 minutes from both VA and WV. While I have no problems going wherever they need me to (single, 26 year old living with my parents after a nasty break up) are there any local hubs for Prime?

    3. The past couple of years has been rather spotty, but I've only quit one job in the past 2 years. I can explain these further, but I've worked for about 4 different companies. Do you think that will affect my getting hired on?

Personally, I'd skip the community college CDL and get it through Prime. It's free & you'll get more road time. I've heard stories of guys doing the community college CDL & only having 4-10 hours behind the wheel, while Prime will require 75 hours.

There's a terminal in Pittston, PA.

And the only one who can answer employment history questions is a recruiter.

Read the pinned thread "New to Prime, Inc, Springfield Edition" for every answer you could ever want & good luck.

Congratulations on pursuing your dream of becoming a truck driver!

How you start in this industry can make a huge difference in how long you stay in it. Where you get you cdl and the program you go through can also make the difference between having the tools you need to be safe or just enough training to pass your cdl exam and be dangerous out on the road. If you spend just a couple minutes on this forum researching schools and training programs you'll find most programs out there just give you enough info to pass your cdl and be dangerous on the road.

Prime's program is one that focuses on you getting the proper training so you can be safe out there. While you go through the cdl training part, you'll be one on one with an instructor the whole time. You have to complete 75-100 hours behind the wheel driving with the instructor before you can test for your cdl.

There is a lot of information on this forum about Prime and it's training program. I would recommend you start with this thread first and read it from the beginninghttp://www.thetruckersreport.com/truckingindustryforum/threads/new-to-prime-inc-what-to-expect-springfield-edition.197427/

    Good luck,

Just to add to the above good replies........

Go ahead and check out the community college school with Prime. Since it may be paid for, might be worth checking out. They may or may not be familiar with them, and can give you a better answer. Same w/ your previous job history.

The community college course I was going to go through in VA was well respected. Pricey, but quality experience & time behind wheel. That said, I know it would not have compared at all to the training I received going straight to Prime. There is NO substitute for time & actual "real" experience. Plus, add in the fact that your going to need at least a year (or more) experience, without job hopping, to be attractive to the upper tier companies......it's a pretty good deal. And, a great company on top of it.

Only thing it may do is cut out that year obligation. You will still have to go through their own training, though.

    Best to ya.

    Awesome stuff guys, thanks!

As far as my job history goes, I'll go ahead and explain that now. The first company hired upwards of 17-18 people to do a job that took 6-7. It was in a dining hall in a government building, but it was family owned and operated. I was the new guy, and when they realized "Hey we can't make payroll" 2-3 times, I was the first one told to find another job.

The 2nd company I loved. I worked there for about 3 months when I was ridiculed by one of my senior sales agents for not selling product (while on the phone with the customer, who heard them yelling at me) to her particular standards. My supervisor said this was perfectly acceptable despite this being in front of about 40+ people who stood around staring. I put my 2 weeks in the following day.

The 3rd and 4th companies were both at the same job site. I worked for the 3rd for about 4 months when they lost the contract to the 4th, who then just hired us on to do the same job, but with no benefits, more hours and the same pay per hour. My boss with the 4th then fired me 6 months later when my previous car broke down, saying "I can't help that you can't get to work. I can help that I need someone there, you aren't, so too bad for you" and hung up.

Luckily the 2nd company had a change in management and hired me back. Everything was going great for about 4 months when my fiance and I had some unresolved issues when resulted in a nasty breakup, and me having to quit there and move back to my hometown 3 hours away.

It all kind of sucks, but other than that one time I've never just job hopped, or at least I wouldn't consider it job hopping. I hope Prime doesn't either.

Never know until you try. Be upfront on your app and what you tell the recruiter. Don't omit anything as it will be found out. Print out your online app to prime when you send it in to them so you can refer to it when you go through the interview process once you go to orientation.
    Good luck

I learned a lot in the 2-3 weeks I spent with my PSD instructor before I got my CDL. Then another 6-7 weeks teaming. He was good, and I learned as much if not more than I would of in the community college program just in the short period of time. No reason to saddle yourself with thousands of dollars in debt before you've even hit the road.

One thing you don't read about or hear people talk about and it fits with you statement, "no reason to saddle yourself with thouasnds of dollars in debt", Prime gives you a free 7 day look before you are locked into that year long contract. What that means is you have 7 days from the day you get on your trainers truck to decide if Prime is the company for and if you are cut out to be a truck driver. Now the catch is, if you decide to pull the escape cord, you're on your own to get home. Prime paid for you to get there, you get to pay to leave.

I don't know of any other school or company that offers that, plus puts you up in a hotel, feeds you 3 meals a day and truely tries to take care of you.
