After 13 years of service to Navy I looking at getting back to what I enjoyed doing before the service. I have been reading a few post and noticed alot has changed in my absence I am already looking into going to CDL schooling as it has been 15 yrs since I drove. I have OTR experience in the past and have driven various equipment from tanker to lowboy. I drove for 2 OTR then went LTL for a few years the rest where all local all in all for 10yrs experience. I see some things haven't changed like dispatchers I am seeing some new company out there just want to know who to steer clear of . thank you in advance for any help.

You won't know until you get there, usndcman. All these companies have horror stories backed up by success stories. It seems to me that if they're delivering enough freight to stay in business, they must taking care of most business.

I did that, came back after a decade or two. Pretty much the same thing, me and my truck picking up and delivering cargo. More rules, more cops, more traffic, but then, there's always been rules, cops, and traffic. It's still about earned income and independence, for me, and I'm sure those things are still viable. I believe they'll always be viable because of the nature of the business. Best!

15 years is a lot of time off, even with 10 years prior experience. If I were you, I would probably ask a buddy who has a truck and brush off the dust and practice shifting and backing up. I was laid off for 6 months and had to get use to backing up again, which only took a few tries to remember, but 16 years is a lot. I would think going OTR would be no issue, but going local usually requires no more than a year or 2 off, unless you pass their driving test with no issues.

I'm getting back into it after 13 years. I was nervous getting back in a truck. Amazingly, the shifting and backing came right back to me in just a few minutes. Good luck.

I have been thinking of getting back into trucking been away for 5 years drove for 18 be for leaving it working in the gas field spoiled me use to being paid for all my time. I do a lot of back ground on any company that I consider have not had any luck yet finding one that I want to work for yet. the computer age has made it harder for companies to hide the truth about how they treat drivers I don,t believe everything some one says but when every one has the same complaints I tend to believe them and not the company

Good to see a Navy man, I recently came back to trucking after a 25 year break. If you can afford it pay for driving school yourself, gives you more freedom to choose who you drive for.

There's a shortage of drivers so be patient and pick a company that meets your needs, lots of companies hiring veterans so you should do just fine. It will all come back to you...

thank you all for your input very enlightening, right now looking into the troops to trucker program to see what they have to offer. Have my GI Bill so school is a problem just wish I didn't have to waste my money on it. Yet I understand it a necessary evil plus did the company thing the first time not repeating that again.
