Most folks just pick a number for SSB that they like or means something to them as long as it isn't already being used. You will find duplicates every once in a while but it is pretty rare.

Isn't the 2970N2 greatly improved on AM over the 2970DX?

Thanks hayseed. I figured that was likely the case. Just wanted to avoid stepping on toes. All these years and I never have made a contact on CB sideband. On the ham bands I never have made a AM contact only FM and SSB.

How about drilling a hole and screwing a nut to the counterpoise. No need to weld

Less chance for crap and corrosion to get in there, maybe? And maybe he just likes to weld? I know a guy who makes up excuses to weld stuff because he loves it so much.
