I set up my program as if I were running one of the trucks. I paid myself the same percentages that our drivers make. I got tired of drivers coming in and taring up the equipment and whining and complaining. Every since I have went to our program, guess what? The drivers now take better care of the equipment, knowing that they are paying for the repairs. All of the sudden the trucks started getting better fuel mileage, (more money in their pockets now). Instead of extending the usual 4 days off to 1.5 weeks sometimes, they now stick to a 4-5 day off schedule. This is how I run when I am out there, so I was amazed at when we had company drivers how they would just tare the equipment up and act like it was not their fault. So for all of those that think because I was forced to go to a lease op style program. That I am ripping the driver off, remember that the knife cuts both ways. They guys that we have doing the program love the fact that they run fewer miles, make more money, and are by the house on a pretty regular basis. We do not mile pound, but we revenue chase. I would never offer a program that the lease operator, owner operator, and carrier could not all make money. I believe in the old school ways, we should all work with each other instead of bickering with each other. We all need to make profit together, if our operators are not making what they want then that is because they choose to. Our customers do not paying more for better service so our operators know going into the load what they are getting into. I don't like to be told BS and have smoke blown up my rear, so I won't do it in return.

Trucking has become such a greedfest and liers paradise that it is often times very hard to remain an honest individual in it. I believe that if I have to lie to and steal from the people that work with me, I need to find a new line of work. Maybe I am nieve, but I believe that a man should be payed a honest days wage for a honest days work. Most today have forgotten what that means.

I only work with drivers from the Mid-West, got tired of running all over the country to retrieve our equipment. I have a friend that runs walking floors in Morristown, Az. He pays good, but expects a guy to be willing to work for his money. Most of our guys are old school, and are starting over after a bad divorce. Sorry, I have to be so picky but I have been burned to many times. Like I said if you are interested in talking with the gentleman from Morristown, Az, and you have a good driving record, don't mind getting a little sweaty and dirty. He runs from AZ to TX and back.

One facet to ponder hard before entering into a L/P arrangement is how much sense it makes to lease a truck from the very people giving you your freight, and how much actual control does that give them over your life and livelihood.

Piss them off and they starve you for miles until you default, they get the truck hack and lease it to someone else.

You really put yourself a their mercy. If you are leasing from a different source, you can walk away and find another carrier that will give you more miles.

Why is it that you believe that more miles = more money? We keep our trucks moving at 1800 - 2500 miles and by doing this our guys make more money than those that run 2500 - 3500 miles. You would be amazed at if you have the skill set to tackle the hard docks, treat the customer with dignity and respect. Be willing to wait and be patient, that they are willing to pay for such services. Maybe that is why we pride ourselves as Mercenary truckers, we do the things that others whine about, but we get paid for it.
