Yes they closed it. It was fun. Coming down 380, they gave the warning too late for early planning to go to Dubuque. I saw the backup and wondered about it. Went east and took southern way around it. Iowa has really been hit hard. The flooding in Cedar Rapids is everywhere. I feel for their situation.
-
I 380 will be closed south of Cedar Rapids by 6 PM local time, the highway crosses the Iowa River in that area. 80 is closed because of the Cedar River.
I went up the detour route, bypassing Dubuque, IA. The worst part of that detour would be driving US 20 through that town; the rest of Hwy 20 that is part of the detour is four lane expressway without a single traffic light.
They are calling what has happened at Cedar Rapids a 500 year flood, all of the rivers in Iowa have experienced record flooding this month. When the floods hit the Mississippi, the flooding along that will be probably almost as bad. -
I remember the flood in '93. That was a 500 year flood as well. Time sure fly's!
-
You remember that , too? I think (Yeah, I know, I'm from Iowa) that 500 year events are a pile of male bovine fecal material.
Elgin, Iowa had one of those, they built dikes and levees to prevent another from occurring, then they have higher waters this time around than then, I just can't see building homes on flood plains.
State Farm will no longer insure people living on the Mississippi Gulf coast, at specific distances from the water.
Along smaller rivers in Iowa, if flooding is likely to recur, governments are buying out the property to prevent rebuilding. -
I guess IOWA really means this time, I OUGHTA WENT AROUND!!
I sure hope those folks out there have better luck than the KATRINA victims. -
Let's see how I can get there?

The high bandwidth option is disabled due to high traffic. Calling 511 for highway information isn't working well, it hardly ever works well.
The Mississippi River bridge on US 18 has been undergoing inspection and painting, all permits are now invalid, the weight limit for the bridge is 40 tons.Need to read and heed those signs.
That is not showing up on the DOT maps, the IA 9 bridge is similarly embargoed, has been for a long time, that 1 does show up.
This is in MN, the MN 43 bridge at Winona, MN is currently closed due to gusset plate corrosion, will reopen for non truck traffic tomorrow. -
The present advisory for traffic, particularly truck traffic, is if you aren't delivering in or near the state to take another route. I'd guess I- 90 or I-70
That acronym is kinder than some others.
It is a huge event for the state, but there is planning and cooperation going on here, unlike the Katrina disaster. Local, state and national resources are working to minimize the effects of this disaster. -
They found out that the dikes and levies were the problem in '93. They had channeled the river and closed the natural flood plains off and the river had no where to go. They have since turned a bunch of that back into flood plains, but when you get that much water after a big winter, it's all going to go somewhere.
