Yeah coming in at 1.80 for direct customer freight...not our broker freight we are getting now....and that is not that big of a list, yes I have seen it grow in the few months but a lot of it is hard to position for....any suggestions on that? Except camp in the Midwest mostly and DH to the customers....oops? I just exposed a "secret technique" lol....

I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying that you're averaging $1.80/mi right now? Or are you saying that our customer freight averages $1.80? If it's the latter, then call your OM and try and get some better lanes. The average for the dry van freight last week was $2.048 I believe.

If you don't mind my asking, where do you usually run? Most of our customer stuff comes from Richmond, VA, Atlanta, GA, and Bulls Gap, TN (at least, that's where we typically have multiple lanes every day, there are a ton of lanes that go every other day or twice a week or so). Those shouldn't be too difficult to get to as long as you run out east.

average on DAT is low. You're taking a national average. I'm a driver and can tell you I'm not running 1.80 loads. It costs more than that to run a truck. Pick good lanes and you won't be hauling for a 1.80. You say 2.05 is your average direct freight, I feel sorry for your drivers. It's all about the brokers you work with. Mine do pretty well. 2.50 average for an O/O. Don't run bad lanes...it's not worth the deadhead coming out. Be more honest with your drivers. Sounds like your selling out your own drivers and taking advantage of their lack of experience. Been an owner operator for 25 years and can see what your trying to sell.

I'm not trying to sell anyone on anything. I've been pretty clear on the positives and negatives about everything.

As for $1.80 being too low to run a truck, that's just demonstratively false. I can see the paychecks Drivers make and their OM's average RPLM. $1.80/mi is more then enough to earn a nice living. Of course, if you raise your variable costs, $2/mi may not be enough, but that's up to the individual driver.

Everyone has a different experience. If you've been in the business for 25 years, then I think it's safe to assume you have a strong network of brokers and shippers you work with. That's awesome for your business, but it's not reasonable to tell a new driver to "be like me" when part of that advantage has come with time.

New drivers/carriers aren't getting the best rates because they haven't been operating long enough to establish those contacts. That's not lying/misinformation as much as it is common sense.

As an aside, I don't appreciate the accusation that I'm lying of taking advantage of anyone. I said in my first post that I wasn't here to pitch anything or recruit anyone. I said I wouldn't give my name and to date, even though people have PMed me asking for it, I've kept my word.

Also, one of the more frustrating parts of this business is that people seem to be unusually dishonest. (**to be 100% clear, I'm NOT accusing you of being dishonest***). I have seen first hand Drivers that consistently lie about their paychecks or the paychecks of others (remember we can see settlements) or the loads that they feel they can get. Nothing is more frustrating then having someone say they want to work with XYZ broker because they have a $3/mi load going 1000 miles or something only to see no proff, and then call XYZ brokerage only to be told they don't even run that lane. I've just never been part of an industry where everyone lied so much, it's absolutely crazy.
