Stingers vs rates?

    Am hearing Cottrell is booked up infinitely(it seems) & all the specialty head rack builders are on a year or so waiting list to get you in. Am I the only one that reads that as rates will (continue) to drop as more new high capacity equipment hits the road? I do not know what sort of discount the bigs may be able to pull out of either Pete &/or Cottrell, but the avg o/o pricing is in the $240-$285 thousand range. That is not something that can sit & wait for rate cycles to adjust.

    Last year the 7/8 car high mounts were in demand. This year am seeing them sit on Truck Paper. Not sure if co's have actually sold them & using them as bait to get people to call in or if they are in fact sitting on their lot.

    To be clear, not knocking stingers or the buyers of any of the above equipment. But just have to think it will have a dramatic affect on rates with more capacity rolling down the road?

    I can't really speak on the rates dropping as I haven't really encountered that yet but I am leased and not on my own.
    The head rack shops do have somewhat of a waiting list but it isn't quite that long. The place where I park just got a new unit and took like 4 months for the head rack and trailer. Actually the trailer was done before the rack was.
    From what I am seeing LBZ is that the rail system is staying behind and auto sales have been on the rise. That in turn makes more demand for trucks with more capacity would be my guess.
    Another thing you have to factor in is that so many new units have to be strapped and people are upgrading their equipment to follow the times.
    These thoughts are more guesses than facts but when you look at and think about it seems like what may be going on.

    SX, I think the last part of your post is spot on, after the 08 meltdown, nobody bought anything for almost two years, if equipment was needed a lot of old stuff was drug out of the weeds repainted hosed and put on the road.

    Now add to that all the oem's spec'ing straps and you have the perfect storm, but as far as Brad's original post goes, it IS a gamble for an O/O esp. IF fuel rates stay where they are, I know I will get stoned for this, but I almost wish fuel prices would jump a bit and kill off some of these "Hobbiest" car haulers.

    The cyclical ups and downs of the Carhaul Industry. The rail roads haul autos dirt cheap. Therefore it is the least priority for track schedules. If the UPS train is coming thru, the auto train will wait on the siding, etc. etc. Goes the same for rolling stock. The railroads have no problem putting autoracks in storage and then telling the shippers they are out of railcars. Which in turn creates premiums for truck space.

    I hope you guys are right!! Where are the used ones going? Seems to be a lot of new people hauling cars. I feel it was a lot busier last year than this year.

    Overflow rates seem to be cheaper than last year also. Atleast by the time little me gets it.

    Honestly, I see a LOT of old stingers (just the trailer) sitting around, parked/scrapped, sold to Mexico?

    Overflow rates are down from last year, everybody thinks that when fuel drops a penny rates should drop a dime.

    Was told or read that one of the delays at Cottrell was a large order going to Mexico?

    They do build new ones for them yes. Pretty wild looking set ups.
    There is going to be a WHOLE lot of old URS/Waggoners trucks on the market before long. They are selling off a lot of their old equipment.
    I think the overflow rates dropping has to do also with more and more companies getting their foot in the door and willing to do it cheaper.
    I agree with Slant as well as far as the ups and downs. It takes me back to the days of the Soverign blue trucks running around being renamed Bankrupt blue!
    I personally wouldn't ever buy a new truck for that reason. The prices of the new stingers and a few bad months could equal disaster!
