It may make you more hirable and I think some of our guys have them ,but we pretty much stopped going to ports after they started requiring TWIC. In my opinion, better to avoid ports. A lot of the military guys also have passports because it's so easy for them to get....allows them to take loads to Canada easier...also not worth the hassle. However, a passport won't get you into Canada if you have a criminal record, so I hear.

I'd ask the company you plan to go with before shelling out a bunch of money.

Already have a passport card...that will allow border crossings by land. I'll ask the companies I'm talking with about TWIC. Thanks!

They seem to be a little more on the ball now. I did the enrollment/fingerprinting a week ago Tuesday (16 June) and my card showed up in the mail today (26 June). A nice surprise when they are still telling people 4-6 weeks!

I applied (fingerprinted) for HME and TWIC at the same time. Got TWIC in less than two weeks. HME took 6 weeks. There seems to be no rhyme or reason ...

I'm certain no one else has had this luck getting a TWIC card: From the day of fingerprinting to receipt was 4 days. Got the card PIN 3 days later.
I got the TWIC Virginia - which uses an independent agent to process the application. I do have an active DoD security clearance which may have expedited the process but I cannot confirm this.
I was worried it would take 7 weeks to complete much like the ATF form 4 did.

Guess I was the extremely lucky one, renewed on a Thursday, picked it up on Monday, can't get much faster than that!
