I hear ya! I think I told you that the King originally had the 7" screen RM gps .....the reason being that I worried about his eyes .
I think one of the nicer features on this tablet is that the RM Atlas is preloaded on it. I can't tell you how many times the magnifying glass has come out while trying to get a better idea especially on the maps for big cities. This eliminates that problem ....it will zoom right in with just a touch of the screen.
I don't know if anyone else has had any problems with their older gps but in some of the out of the way places that the King was having to run, when he really needed the gps, his old one was losing it's connection service. The new one has an enhanced service connection ....that was one reason I went with it....and for what it is worth it never lost service out in the backwoods......Have any of you had to pick up at the Bush bean factory in Tennessee? You better have a good gps.....they are serious about keeping that family recipe secret! :biggrin_2552:

Hopefully these tablets will come down in price. If you enjoy the technology and like using a tablet then it is a good deal. For us it was something that had to be replaced anyway and was a combination write off/birthday/Father's Day gift.

I understand you about a combo device going down being a problem, but really, I have basic backups to everything, for example, I could run a truck GPS off my phone if I had to. I would like to have everything in one place, just to be more organized. I also like to cut and paste from one program to the next. Like look up an address in a web browser and also paste that same address to a GPS.

A laptop or a larger screen tablet would work fine for me if I could get all the programs I want in one format. My GPS software is Android based, my HOS logs are windows based. Dash cam is Android but I could probably find if for windows.

One problem I have read about with a laptop, a laptop hard drive can not take all the bumping and shaking to run as your main tool in the truck. There is a way you can load a basic copy of windows onto a flash drive (a solid drive that is not effected by being knocked around) and run off of that, but again, I have been too unorganized to put it together.

RM has the right idea with the tablet. All of the stand alone GPS devices , like the RM 510 are mini computers (RM 510 is Windows XP based), we just need more freedom to add and subtract programs to suit our needs.

Windows XP based and as XP is a dead no longer supported Windows Product without any future development or enhancement , not too long before its useless

^Yeah it was a big story in the news about 18 months ago. Never the less, there are still hundreds of millions of XP based devices up and running including the ATM I used yesterday and my GPS I just updated online.

The point is, units like a stand alone GPS are really just a small laptop using XP or the next generation. Only problem, free user input is not allowed.

I am not as technologically advanced as some of you guys.....it's kinda like my car.....I know how to drive it but really don't want to know how to change the oil in it. :) Yeah, I know .....I'm gonna get a lot of flack over that one!:biggrin_2559: But that's what we have passport for!
The King always had his laptop with him ,,,,in a well-padded case. He never had a problem with it but it is true they are not made to take the bouncing associated with a vehicle.....hence the case. It never was as convenient as this tablet......being able to google the address was just a click away. Like most tablets you have the capability to download different apps. He can also connect his original dash cam to it and have a two camera system.....there are times that comes in handy.
Our opinion on the new tablet has been good overall ....but it is just our opinion. It is convenient, enjoyable to use and has many features that have made the job a little easier.

That is good to know. I thought it may be locked, like some phones, so RM would have to approve, and take a payment for anything you installed on it.

I will get the book out and scan a couple pages for you, passport.....it might be a bit more detailed than the general information available online. :)
