when you finally get out on your own, do they start you with a shorter trailer? or is this just by the company?
I notice when I drive around I see some trailers that are ridiculously long and some that are fairly short.
trailer length for first year?

Typically, you get to pull, what the company has. Most if not all fleets are 53 footers.Longarm Thanks this.

There are some docks I've been to that I wished I had a 48 ft trailer, but I haven't pulled a 48 since CDL school.

You bobtail for your first year. If you don't screw up, you get a trailer
postmandav, MysticHZ, S M D and 16 others Thank this. -
53' and touche on the 48... especially when out west, always some sort of craziness when backing.

Out West? Holy Schmoly... Ever been to the North East?

Probably 95% of OTR fleets are 53' ers. Spread axle vans are 48' ers. City P/D fleets use 28' ers, which is half a set, or, one of two trailers that make a set (of doubles). Some P/D fleets use 30' ers with a tailgate. Then there's low boys for OD loads (OD, over dimensional) that can be very long but aren't the norm. Now if you see a 53' er that's stretched (the tandems all the way to the rear), it will look very long.

New Haven to Camden frequently, honestly prefer NE to West; alley docks and 90 degree no problem, the blindside crap I have to do in Nogales all the time is not fun.

Some local drivers roll with 28', or a "pup" as some would call it.
