Thanks. I appreciate the info. We have the gi bill, so we are not worried about paying for the school. It's trying to find a decent company that works with entry level experience. We are definitely going to be doing our homework before jumping in. I greatly appreciate the honest advice.

Thick skin. If you dont have it, grow it. That goes for this site, and trucking.

As long as you can test clean and don't have a criminal record you're fine.
Not trying to give you a hard time but admitting your past to a recruiter was incredibly stupid.
Pretty well everyone on this board has done things in their past that would disqualify them from employment had they been caught. But we're smart enough to keep it to ourselves.
As far as pot goes you can be President, but not a truck driver if your past is found out. -
Don't tell any company you did drugs. None of their business. You quit and that's all there is to it.

Listen to us on this one thing. Take your time reading up on trucking. 100%+ turnover rate in this industry. A lot of people get into it and realize it's not what they thought it was going to be. They quit and go back home to get a 9-5 job. This forum is full of a lot of info. If you read up and have a good head going into it then you'll do just fine.

Husband and wife team here. Friends with other husband and wife teams. A few quit cause they didn't realize it wasn't all fun and games.

Tonitos, slim shady and truckon Thank this. -
I've been an OTR driver for close to 6 yrs now. I've been in recovery from heroin/morphine addiction for close to 8 yrs now. On every job application I've filled out, I always check "no" when it asks if I've ever used drugs or have a substance abuse history. The way I see it, as long as I continue to stay clean, it is none of their business.
I've seen drivers sent home from orientation for disclosing to the company that they are former addicts/alcoholics. I know you say that you only smoked pot, and I'm sure you don't consider yourself to be a recovering addict, but disclosure of illicit substance use of any kind should not be made to your potential employers.
There are many folks on this forum who believe, ignorantly, that a past that includes substance abuse should be an automatic disqualifier for employment as a driver. Most companies feel the same way. Good luck in your trucking career.Shaggy, BriDan07, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this. -

Getsinyourblood, okiedokie and TruckDuo Thank this. -
First off I'd like to congratulate you and your wife for conquering an obstacle for the betterment of your future; always easier said than done.
Second I want to make it clear that some things you should keep to yourself and is for you and you only. One of the first things I was told when entering this industry was never confirm what can't be proven (and that was by a recruiter from a well-respected carrier).
If someone tells you that you should tell the 100% truth because they do then they're a liar. I'm pretty sure they don't compile a list of the illegal things they do like jaywalk, litter, speed, check their phone while driving, gamble at home, not report tips to IRS, not wear seatbelts, not fully read and follow terms of service they agreed to, etc then proceed to turn the list in to the proper authorities.
While working at Walmart years ago when I asked a veteran trucker about his longevity then he said "C-Y-A, son. Cover your ###! Or brace yourself for the pain that's coming."
Lastly there are other training programs that you can apply for. Try them out. Good luck to you and your mrs! -
They may test you at school too.

####, that's one of the first things they did.
