Hey guys. Im just doing some future thinking. Im brand spanking new to driving. Ive been driving for 2 days lol doing flatbed for CT of comcar. Anyway some of yiu may remember i got a 379exhd 2002 thats pretty beat uo from my dad. I plan on putting aside a good chunk of change for the truck while i work at CT. My main question is how much money do you guys feel is nessasary to have in savings for truck repairs. My second question is what kinda of hauling puts less strain on the truck. I really enjoy flat bedding (so far) but would really like to stay local. No more then 3 days not being in my own bed. Flat bed trailers seem cheap enough. Many sone other advice id appreciate. Id figure im about 3 yrs out before making any big moves. Thanks in advance

Been a carrier a loooooooong time. In 3 years everything will be different.

-I like to keep at least $500,000 in the repair pot, but you could probably get away with $30,000.
-The least strain on a truck is done by a smooth driver, not a light load.
-3 overnights = 4 days which is pretty much everything east of the Rockies
    -keep an open mind
-rebuild the complete drive train (motor, air to air, rad, turbo, etc, tranny, diffs, drive shafts, yokes, carrier bearing), but do it as close to putting the truck on the road as you can. Seals dry up and then everything leaks when you start your venture. This will be around $30k
-keep your life to a minimum. ie- no payments, no large pets, no clingy significant others. Nothing leads to bad decisions more than eminent doom (mortgage payment, mad spouse) looming over your head.
-I would have thought that flatbeds were extremely expensive compared to a free truck.
    - learn everything you can about transportation. Trucking is the easy part.

Some people are running more than 1 truck/trailer. The point is the number is different for everyone and every truck.

A truck sitting that long is going to need serious work to get it road legal. You'd probably be better off selling it now, sitting on that money for three years, then buying a well serviced truck that doesn't need $10-30k before you can put it to work.
