I started traveling on a whim after my last divorce.
Company I worked for at the time left me run 6 months and I would take a month or 6 weeks off at one shot. Then I traveled. Plus they parked the trk. so I didn't have to clean it out.
I then bought my own and did the same thing. Untill I met my now wife. We work most of the year then take our time off
One of my buddies works for a couple years or so and then takes a leave from the company for maybe 6 months and travels all over.
He has toured Europe Spain some of the former parts of the Soviet Union and the middle east. The last two years he has been traveling Asia and working. Now he's back driving a trk. for the same company

Still not sure of the OP's reasoning of not flying commercial because of TSA. I fly A LOT and in fact recently had to get a new passport because my current book was out of pages. I've NEVER encountered any of the untrue and over inflated stories of the TSA but that's his choice to not fly.

Moving on though, I travel a lot, will be in Jamaica for a week in December and going to China in February for a few days just because I can and I want that stamp in my passport book. I still have my passport book with the DDR stamp from when East Berlin was still behind the iron curtain. Had a little `splainin to do with US Customs when I got back to US soil.

Yes anyone can travel on drivers wages, it's all about choices and money management. Stop eating the fast food crap in the truckstops for a few months, buy healthy food and put the remainder of the money in a savings account. In a few months you'll be booking a trip and paying cash.

From China it's a 5 hour flight I believe. My one buddy flew from Shanghi to Bangkok.
Be warned though alot of tour groups have been flying from China to Thailand, so some flights might be packed

considering, that if you plan accordingly, you get can get round trip airfare to Europe for under $800 (yes it's coach), and then a Eurorail pass, you'll be set. Guy that works for one of our competitors did the ultimate, he and his wife saved for a few years, put a $10K down payment on an E-class Mercedes, took the European delivery option, and spent 21 days in Europe. MB handled many of the details of the trip, the airfare and part of the trip was built into the financing of the car. IIRC, they had to cover out of pocket their food, trinkets, and the last 7 days of the trip. On the 15th day, the dropped the car at the exporter in Paris, spent the next 7 days travelling by train and rental car, then flew home from London.

Ultimately, I don't think I'll ever get around to doing it any time soon.
Made the mistake of buying a Jeep Liberty that didn't work, and then trading it for a new, Chevy pickup that I hardly ever drive.
Seeing as how I don't want to ruin my credit after building it back up, first priority is getting that hunk of steel paid off and then sending it on it's way.
After that, I'll more than likely find a way to get this done.

Not to mention with no burdens of a "wife or kids at home", I shouldn't be worrying over a "right" time to get this done.

The military approach is only during phase 1. After that you're on a ship for about 3 months. One month for each dept (Steward, Deck, and Engine). Then you figure out which dept you want to stay with based upon that experience.

    bentstrider83 Thanks this.
