This week got a noise coming from the right side of engine. High pich squel like a belt. Only happens when the truck goes down hill it starts to build up. Then when the truck pulls the hill it will pitch higher (sound) for about 4 seconds then fade out. Doesnt happen at idle or while pulling. Tighten all the boost hose and inspected found nothing. Replaced both belts and new tentioners. I got a inactive code for the egr. The second problem is I can't build up air pressure at idle . Only when the engine is a 1000 rpms or higher. replaced governer no help.. Can't hear any air leaks while truck is off. Could it be Dryer going bad.. I traded a truck in that had a detroit so I am not used to the New ISX EGR engines. I can't seem to get any better than 4.9 mpg . 65 mph or 75 mph.. still only get 4.9 on a load 40k lbs. Seems one problem after another.. Help

Man, that whine is going to be a tough one to figure out with out actually driving it...What kind of truck are we talking about?

As for the air, pull the discharge line off of the compressor, takes a 1" wrench, and check air flow at an idle, ought to be quite a bit. If it is weak, I would pull the unloaders out and see if one is stuck, if so, you can clean and reuse, but I would replace. I havn't messed with that many unloaders on a cummins compressor, but on a cat, there are 2, takes a 1/2" and a 9/16" wrench to pull the out.

I had that same type of sound in my truck with a Cummins ISX from 04 but it only did it when I first started the truck. The belts were new and the hoses were tight. Never caused any problems though.

Had a similar noise in my 05 ISX. Turned out it was a broken exhaust manifold stud. Cylinder 6. Could not tell any other way than by putting a wrench on the bolt and found it was broken. No soot on the engine and no tell tale exhaust tick. I'd check the studs. Even Cummins did not know what it was. They replaced the turbo, but until I put a wrench to the manifold studs we were stumped.

Check all of your air to air coupling boots. I had one on my engine get a small hole in it and it made the exact same noise you are describing. I also thought it was a belt or tensioner, but it was the rubber air to air boot. It will get louder as the turbo boost builds up.

Thanks to all that post . Bluetoy and Roadhound both got it. Had the right side of the engine torn down. What they found where 2 busted exhuast man bolts , cracked exhaust housing off the back of the turbo to the first flex pipe. Also check air to air and found one of the connection leaking. Noise is fixed. $2200 .. If anyone wants to know ISX Turbo starts at $2500 and thats at Turbo Exchange in Charlotte NC.
