At those rates would it not be better deliver 5 next day loads a week rather than 2-3 two-day runs?
That would depend honestly. I usually had 4-5 loads a week and averaged 3800 a week at less than $700 a load, I had several weeks of 2-3 loads a week that generated 3500-5000 those weeks.

Longevity, or frequent use? TMC usually bases or did at the time according to their mentions on it, they base their rates on the longevity of the customer depending on how much freight they ship. One that ships a lot of freight often usually gets a break on rates, where one that doesnt ship as often gets charged a bit more.

Which in turn begs the question of 3PLs. Do you guys deal with any shippers who are solicited by TMC directly? Or does the bulk of your loads come from third parties? Most of TMC's loads are contracted hauls that TMC went out and sought. I only hauled a couple of broker loads. TMC does have their own brokerage.

Seems to me the loads from direct customers should pay a little better. Rumor is that years ago TMC was the in house carrier at SSAB Muscatine Iowa. Seems that TMC raised their rates so high that SSAB threatened to
end TMC hauling out of there as the dedicated hauler. My FM at the time told me that TMC had to drop their rates in the tank in order to keep the contract with SSAB. For instance my first load for TMC was a plate steel load at 42000 from SSAB going to southern indiana paid the truck $650. Was a pretarp load, I just had to throw some extra chains and retarp. Sucks yeah I know

Actually, when I did it I never really viewed flatbed work as all that physical. Sure, you strap/tarp the load, and then you unstrap/untarp the load. Beyond that, it was only driving, and standing there twiddling my thumbs watching the guy on the forklift. I lost 65lbs my first 6 months in flatbed, humping and tugging tarps is physical regardless.

And no 1:00 AM appointments at grocery warehouses. thats a plus in my book, i hate those late night appts

What I would be most afraid of were I in your position would the be the loads that are just ugly looking. I believe those are the ones TMC hauls for Lowes.We never had much choice in how the lowes loads were tarped. they are always preloaded and the tarp laid across the parts that needed covered. Our job was to secure the tarp and strap over it.

In the end as youve seen in my other posts, im no longer with TMC, Im with PGT now and dont regret my choice. I make more without having to stay out for 2 weeks at a time

Regardless i still recommend people to go there as a starting place. I had a decent experience other than being pushed to become a trainer

Oh i was, just my fleet manager kept bringing it up as a way for me to make more money

They'd be hard pressed to convince me that it's worth that extra money.

We actually pulled out of SSAB because TMC dropped the rates so low we would have had to drop our rates over $1 a mile
