Slow down in freight

JIT freight came from the auto makers to eliminate the expedite freight and lower rates. They suckered quite a few companies on this.

 

Not sure about all the origins of this but JIT is not a "transportation" thing but more a manufacturing managment process. And the transportation is just a part of that. And if planned correctly then the transportation would be contracted as part of the whole process. If a truck is not used as contracted, then it is still paid for. If a truck is delayed or late then a penalty is charged.

If the process is done correctly then expidite never should have been a part of this. But when a scheduled shipment is missed, then it moves to expidite or hot freight.

 

Ford motor co. thinks differently....

I remember when the JIT thing became popular in the steel and auto industry as I just went from one to the other. I can remember when a load of blanks paid extremely well, but were considered expedite cause they had to be there no questions asked. Then from our point of view things changed to JIT and the rates lowered to no better than coil rates but still had time limits on them or the demand was still the same but with lower pay.

 

2.49 loaded with little to nothing coming out of SD...... not great .

JIT came from the Japanese Toyota Production System (TPS). Its the philosophy of saving warehouse space and only ordering what is needed to control cost and quality.

 

That was a sucker load. A loser. Fuel was probably 75 cents a gallon higher (or more) back then and SD is a dead hole. 300 some loads within a 100 mile radius of Knoxville, TN that was without any doubt dead, dead, down time of the market for Knoxville area. But that load probably didn't stay on the board long because of it. Guaranteed whoever booked it got shafted.

I knew the thread was inadvertently dredged up and you were being a smart ### about it. Doesn't mean we can't look back in time and have a discussion.

 

In may , pulled this load for 1900... now , same broker, lane, load, weight, product is trying to get it moved for 1200. Now, just sitting, sitting ....
