Hi all. Just wanted to tell all of you thanks for all the good information about TA. I'm active duty Navy right now, and have decided that trucking is the way I'm going to go when I retire in about 16 months. I have been following this thread all the way back from the old thread and every question I had, and others I didn't even know I needed to ask, you guys have answered. That is just awesome! TransAm is on the top of my list because of the info I have picked up here. I'll continue to follow the fun and watch for more good info! Thanks again guys, be safe out there.

FYI-
CVSA’s 2015 Annual Brake Safety Week is September 6-12. Law enforcement agencies across North America will conduct brake-system inspections on large trucks and buses to identify out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system violations as part of Brake Safety Week.http://cvsa.informz.net/…/bWFpbGluZ2luc3RhbmNlaWQ9NDkxNTY0N…

Welcome ShadowSix, thank you for your service! We are pleased to have you join us.There are many companies that would be happy to sign you on. TransAm is a good place to continue learning,( getting your cdl is a very small part of the trucking business)....consider it an apprenticeship. Don't expect to make a lot of money but do expect to learn at their expense. Use them in the same way that they use their drivers .....they make money off of them by giving student drivers an opportunity to learn the industry and you are using them to make money in the future because you will have better opportunities. As Pete has said many times, it is a matter of expectations.
Thank you for joining us and chime in anytime !Panhandle flash and ShadowSix Thank this. -
Be sure and pick up little things for them in your travels, texashounddog.....even just pretty little rocks from different states or postcards, etc.. They will love it ....especially because they will know they are always on your mind.
That is how my infamous map and map pins came about. (Yes, it is real) I have a big map hanging up above my desk and we started tracking all of the places that the King was.
All of those little things keep your family connections strong. -
Thanks HTQ!!! I am looking at several different companies, but I'm really leaning toward TA because they are Kansas based, and I'm a Wichita native. Olathe is a short trip up the road for me. I've done a lot of research about the business and I think I have established some realistic expectations. I'm not doing it for the money, my Navy retirement will be a nice chunk of change every month, and I'm single with very few bills so that will help as well. I know from reading these forums NOT to take a lease option lol! I just plan on being a company driver, and making enough money to supplement my retirement check from the Navy. I think it will be a good fit for me. I'm used to solitude and being away from family for months if not years at a time and I'm good with that. Being gone for a few weeks will be a cake walk compared to 9 months at sea lol! Thanks for the warm welcome!
jaso37 and HometimeQueen Thank this. -
welcome aboard sailor
I will tell you one thing that seemed always true with TA and isn't with others
They seem to on purpose not run you by the house. I think they are afraid of people quitting if they get near home
so dont let there proximity be the deciding factor
they are just a starting co
get experience and move on
Magnum and Abilene is where I would start if I had to do it all over againPanhandle flash and ShadowSix Thank this. -
Thanks Cranky for the info! I looked into Abilene but was under the impression that they don't hire right out of school. I haven't looked into Magnum at all but I definitely will! I'll also do some more research into Abilene. My plan was to get a year or so OTR experience at my first company and then try to get in with Abilene. There's another thread on here, a very lengthy one like this TA thread, that had a ton of good infomation on Abilene and I was pretty much sold on trying to get on there after I put my dues in at one of the "starter" companies. Thanks again for the info, looks like I have some things to look up. You be safe out there.HometimeQueen Thanks this.

Quoting Chinatown apply even if it says experiance required. With your Naval career some that say they want 6 to a year may waive it for you.
ShadowSix, bigred81 and HometimeQueen Thank this. -
on that Abilene thread JohnBoy is a trainer
he tried training our own George

Being close to one of the yards makes it more convenient for orientation and when you are ready to move on. You accumulate more stuff than what you realize when it is time to unpack your truck. I think in the years that the King was with TransAm they ran him by the house approx. 6 times .....and only one time did it work out that he could take his 10 at the house. I think for most of you that really doesn't matter anyway because you are prepared to be out for a certain length of time. Being close to the yard has more to do with the convenience of starting and when you are ready to leave.
ShadowSix Thanks this.
