Why doesn't Swift allow you to buy a inverter and they install it, I would even pay for them to install it then it would be no cost to them, and they could insure it was done properly?

because they hate their drivers
MidwestResident, flood, Straight Stacks and 3 others Thank this. -
a lot of companies don't allow drivers to mod company trucks in any way.
MidwestResident Thanks this. -
Because, as it was told to me....they had more than one truck burn to the ground.
You get idiot drivers who don't understand wattage ratings plugging everything but the kitchen sink into a 300 watt inverter and before you know it you have a massive fire hazard.
So you pay for the sins of the lowest common denominator.MidwestResident Thanks this. -
And do you want to pay them to uninstall it and reinstall it every time you switch trucks? Not to mention a 2-3 day wait at some terminals to get work done ... spend your home time sitting in there terminal having your inverter work done at $50 and hour.MidwestResident and antoinefinch Thank this.

Personally I think they should start buying trucks with APU's. Of course, the people who make these decisions aren't the ones who spend 26 days of the month sleeping in their vehicles. I'm sure they'd feel a little different if they had to spend 80% of their time camped out at a truck stop or rest area.
I guess that's why I'm glad I'm with a smaller company now; I'm now a human being instead of a robot or a cog in a machine.MidwestResident Thanks this. -
Can't cost justify it ... pretty much have to be idling full time to rationalize an APU expense. I run my own truck, did the numbers and I can't justify it ... do I idle? Sometimes, especially now and for about the next 5 weeks.
Swift doesn't make a big deal about company drivers idling. You can walk down the bob tail lot in Phoenix - even in the winter - a lot of the company trucks are idling. Nobody says squat.
As far as being treated like a robot or a cog ... act like you're working for machine and you get treated like you're part of machine. Every transaction is relational, even if it's momentary. Spend a few seconds on pleasantries before you conduct business, let them know you care about them and their job and they'll care about yours.spectacle13 and MidwestResident Thank this. -
Diesel would have to get around $5 a gallon for them to justify a apu . Also swift leases 90% of their trucks and if they modify the trucks they have to pay 2500 when they return them

Swift makes a HUGE deal out of idling. They wanted no more than 10% and were constantly griping every week about idling. We got so tired of it, hubby found a local job wirh another company. Not to mention the drive cams were a no go for us.MidwestResident Thanks this.

The 10% figure goes up or down in the summer it was like 30ish % honestly I gave a rat ### about idling.
As long as you where below 50% they #####ing a little but that's about it. I know last summer ran a lot of nights idle was round 45%.... But the camera part I agree with you 110% why I gave up trucking because that is the way it's heading.HousTank Thanks this.
