Yeah driving a truck is an occupation probably better suited to a loner. When I retire I plan on finding a cave in the woods to live in. If any visitors come around I'll stick my head out and growl at them.

I got into trucking for a couple reasons. No. # 1 ......I had visited 49 countries while in the Navy, and had only seen 13 states. No.# 2........I did a little driving before I went in the service (logging trucks), and always wondered what it would be like to go coast to coast. I got to run to the coast about 25 times, and loved every minute of it.
Don't be afraid to get out of the truck for a day or so......... here and there .........and go see things. I did it quite frequently. You are in charge of your time of availability once you are running well, and understand how things work with the company. Don't let some "wet behind the ears" dispatcher dictate your driving, and availability. Burn yourself out of hours in place where it might be fun to see.
Take time to smell the roses....... and don't live for the truck or the job.zoekatya, morpheus, cnsper and 1 other person Thank this. -
I am 50 and don't mind being alone but not sure about 3 to 4 weeks at a time. No wife, no kids, (that I know of....)6daysontheroad Thanks this.

Well, I have seen 44 states and 3 countries. I am not the type to be defined by my job. At 50, I am a butcher and tired of overseeing a crew. Plus the onset of carpal in the wrists is happening a bit. most cutters I know who are 60+ have it full blown and I do not want to be one of them.

Join a dating website and have a girl (or guy) in every port

Understand that! I did sheetrock for the past 11 years before shutting down my business. Finishing is tough on the wrists and shoulders, and hanging is tough on the back.
For some stupid reason, I am driving a dump truck these days and get to beat up my entire body
Mack's can be rough.........lol -
All joking aside. One of the reasons I like driving a truck is the solitude. No bosses looking over your shoulder, no gossiping co-workers, not many office politics. On the other hand I have met a few A-holes, but have also met many interesting characters out on the road. While I'm not a very social person I have made quite a few friends that I still keep in touch with to this day.
I guess it's all what you make of it. If your prone to loneliness and depression holing up in a truck somewhere would not be a good idea. If your layed over or doing a somewhere get out and explore otherwise it will drive you crazy.
ac120 Thanks this. -
Some people get a nice truck and tour the country doing shows - hauling freight to and from

I guess the best piece of advice I can give you is think of something to look forward to
