One of my first times on the road while at school I got stuck at an intersection like the one you described.
Got stopped at a red light that was 20 yards up a steep hill. Stalled the truck 3 times trying to start in third, missed 2 green lights, had a line of pissed off cars behind me and some sneaking by on the passenger side since the instructor had me put on the flashers. Finally got going in 1st, cranked it up to 1800-2000, went to 2nd, then 3rd.
After that I decided I would always start in 1st at that intersection. But as fate would have it, I never got stopped at a red light there after that time.
Don't worry too much about grinding gears. The instructors I had were saying that during the actual road test, it doesn't matter if you grind or shift hard. What matters is that you can get it back into gear, ANY gear, before coasting for 1 truck length or it's an instant fail.
Starting From a stop on slight incline..

That's OK mikeeee, the more you drive the better you get. When I retired I bet I only rolled back less than an inch if any depending on the hill. But you can not expect a new driver to do what we do after all the time we've spent behind the wheel. It's our job to teach them and putting the same expatiations on them right out of the gate is not realistic. Reassurance and practice is what we should expect so they become safer. But you knew that.RedTheTrucker Thanks this.

Less than an inch was during my licensing exam! For some reason the examiner had me stop three times at the stop sign exiting the lot to begin the route. To this day I have no idea why. I rolled up, stopped at the line, signaled, waited for his instruction to proceed, did so then he said stop! Again two more times!
I was ahead of the curve. I was always auto driven. As a kid 'vrooming' matchbox cars along the patterns of our living room carpet trying not to touch the lines, to never having a ticket driving the four wheeler from 16yo to date, racing Hi-Performance Go Karts for 6 years then racing RC cars competitively across the nation dialing in a setup, then being able to drive it consistently for 15 laps where 2 seconds slower, total, after 4 minutes of racing, would put you back into 50th place out of 100 or more and I was happy to get top 25%, upset with less.
For me, hill starts was just lift off the clutch until it starts to grab, at that point lift of the brake and apply the throttle as needed to keep from stalling.
But I couldn't tell you the capitol of Ohio or who was president in 19(whatever) We are all built different.

Now you get to be on the hill with a minivan full of babies right on your bumper every time you gotta stop on a hill!!
But youll be alone, so you'll make your shifts..Just put one foot on your dash and pull the shifter till it goes in!!!
Glad to see a youngster here asking questions !! Its a serious gig!!RedTheTrucker Thanks this.
