I have been a driver at Interstate for 4+ years and one of my good friends is a trainer here for the military program. I know they pay drivers during the training ONCE they get their CDL from a school, but they don't pay you while you are in school.

Wondering if this is a misunderstanding of the CDL school portion vs. being placed in a truck w/trainer once the CDL is in hand.

I wouldn't be surprised if they suddenly produced a document with some very fine/small print that states something like "Classes are subject to a minimum number of students" to cover their arse. I assume they're attempting to run a business, and the costs can't be higher than the revenue... so unfortunately it sounds like your husband is getting the short end of the stick on this one. Good luck to you both with this mess.

In your situation with Knight, have you made some type of agreement that you'll stay with them for a certain period of time and/or miles after you get the CDL through their training program?

I do agree with various people who say that the truck driving student should be paying for his or her schooling, just as any other student, in any other trade or profession, would be paying for his or her schooling.

If I had completed CDL school and found an entry level job at any trucking company, and the trucking company stated that I would have to go through their additional training, including going out with a mentor for a number of weeks, I would definitely agree to it.

If that same trucking company stated that I had to pay for that additional training, again I would definitely agree to it. One cannot put a price on initial or additional training at all.

Once all the additional training was over, and HOPEFULLY I was accepted into the company, then I would expect to start receiving a paycheck. It would NOT matter if the paycheck was paid weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly, just as long as I was getting paid what the agreed amount was.

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!

Well, Sneakerfix, I am here to testify Swift paid me $450/week during training, 4 weeks with a pathetic, obese, lying, sneaking trainer. They paid me during orientation after I wrote a letter to HR and told my story, proved my allegations with facts, smiled as he lost his trainer gravy. Orientation was 3 days, but they did pay me for it. Like I say, paid the training.

Yes they paid you during your mentor training just not for your CDL training. I went to swift

I'd bet $20 that they thought they had a way to tap Uncle Sugar's federal re-training dollars in conjunction with the technical college, and at the last minute found out it wasn't going to work.
