I am interested in getting my CDL but want a very clear idea of what to realistically expect first.
Is it possible to get a 1st job that will get you home every night?
I am in my early 50's and I would rather not lift more than 50 pounds.
Case in point, I can't see myself delivering beverages to retail outlets.
"No touch" or tankers, all the better.
Is this possible?
Finally, what type of endorsements would be best to obtain if you wanted to put yourself in a good position for getting a job that would get you home every night?
Thanks!

Where do you live? It is very possible...get all endorsements.

I agree, it's very possible, depending on where you live. You might not get the best jobs out there right off the bat, can think of a few desirable ones someone could walk into but they are selective on whom they hire. If your only goal was to be home every day, I don't see why not. You can drive a box truck here in St Loius and make$18 an hour and be home every day

Depends on the company you choose. If its a mega carrier highly unlikely. But there are many companies that have a dedicated fleet meaning get home every weekend.Would that be something of interest if you can't find a local position? You can even try Schawn's,they're always looking for drivers and you get home every day. That's a class B job and theywill help you get your B license.Otherwise to get your classA you probably will have to go out with a trainer and be away from home for the entire training phase which is 6 to 8 weeks.

If you live in a city look into beverage delivery, soda or beer. Will keep you in shape and you'll be home every night and probably my have weekends off.
I just went back to delivering soda after the oilfields went bust. Can't beat sleeping in your own bed every night in my opinion.

OP says he don't want to lift more than 50 pounds. Think that puts the kibosh on food and beverage humping.icsheeple Thanks this.

I got on Beverage right from school. Don't rule that out. They all have Bulk delivery drivers as well doing wholesale clubs and grocery stores. Just pallets at that point, nice electric pallet jack. I know Coke and Pepsi seem to merge the two jobs, but Beer typically has Bulk drivers.

Probably pays 2 cents per bottle taken off the truck
