When I started running nights, I went through a whole bunch of five hour energy drinks. After awhile, you get used to it and it's no different than running day shift. Except, less traffic. Less law enforcement. More drunks. More deer. More idiots that won't dim their lights. More gators/chairs/mattresses/auto parts/etc that appear out of nowhere. More big trucks trying to pass you in your lane. Did I mention less traffic?

I run primarily VERY early mornings (1:00am starts) and I like the peace of driving at night. But I also have a buddy or 3 that also run nights, we'll occasionally conference on the blue tooth to pass the time. Usually ends up being a biotch session about the company that employs us or politics or sports. Good sense of camaraderie with our group, kind of a cool thing.
bottomdumpin Thanks this. -
Honestly OP I prefer the solitude. I work the night shift. My shift starts at 1600 and usually getting done around 0300 every once in while it's dawn when I get done though (which does suck). Honestly you have less traffic, you can get in and out of places faster, and people are usually more laid back at night vs daytime where people tend to be more stressed out. Honestly I prefer night driving for the peace and quiet. I'm night owl also so I'm biased here when it comes to day vs night driving.bottomdumpin Thanks this.

i actually prefer NOT to talk to anyone, while driving at night. i have to be more alert ( i think) for deer jumping out in front of me.so i am constantly scanning the shoulders on both sides of the highway. i have to me more alert for drunk drivers. I have to be more alert for cars racing, all thanks to those movies. i have to be more alert to truck drivers, weaving all over the highway, falling asleep.
too much can happen during day time driving, but at night, and on very dark highways, i prefer only the FM radio. -
Been doing it for 15+ years and my best drives are with no radio on, just the sound of the road passing beneath me and following my headlights as it lights up the white dashing lines to my destination. I love it.
pumpkinhead, bottomdumpin, Mr.X and 2 others Thank this. -
Only thing i enjoyed about team training was driving nights... Its a very different compared to days, but theres something very calming and peaceful about it. Most of the chaos of the day is gone, but everything else remains. Cities and roads usually bustling with activity are suddenly ghost towns.
Have to say, I90 in washington/idaho/montana/wyoming looked nothing like I thought it would, the frst time I went across 90 in daylight.. -
