I posted the same question about the same carriers and was pretty much told by everyone to throw all those offers in the river. On the other hand, you also want to start getting the miles under your belt. Its true that you gotta pay your dues. When I hit 100,000 miles there will be no stopping me.

 

Pay your own way. It will make for a better result in the end. You will be able to hire without contact because of it

 

Community college is best in your situation. While there get all the endorsements, passport, TWIC ID Card. Google for nearest TWIC office. TWIC ID Card is used for entry to sea ports, chemical plants, military bases.
Consider going with hazmat tankers right out of CDL school; several will hire new CDL grads.

Submit applications during the first week of CDL school.

 

If Johnston County isn't too far of a drive, JCC in Smithfield is the place to go. I know Garner to Fayettenam/Ft. Bragg took me around 45 minutes, so you can probably expect about the same, since you'd just be shooting up 95.

 

Go to the community college.......it takes that long to really get acclimated to a big rig and your options will be wide open after you get your CDL.

 

Go with the Community College route. If you go through one of the mega carrier's programs, you're an indentured servant to them for a year or more and you may not be happy with the results. Go to the CC, and let carriers recruit you as you near completion - then just choose which suits you best. This way, you hold the cards and set your own terms. Good luck.

 

I used my GI Bill. The gi bill is 36 months. It's good for a four year degree taking the summer off.

I said all that to say trucking driving school is 3-4 weeks and charges your GI Bill 3 months. So even if you hate driving and want to go back to school you're only giving up 3 out of 36 months of GI Bill.

Use the GI Bill if you hate driving at least you don't have a $5,000-$7,000 loan over your head with high interest.

 

First of all thank you for your service to our country. Go GI bill. Get to choose what company you want. May take longer but get better training and if you go company route they take money out of your check to pay for the schooling.
