Even the ones that don't come from mega fleets can be bad, we hired a 25 year veteran of car haul, he was even a former owner operator with his own authority and I will be darned if I can get good productivity out of him. As for truck upkeep, he barely checks the oil, forget about him changing a light bulb or using a field installable hose fitting and nipple to patch a broken hydraulic line, not going to happen. He does run it through the truck wash weekly, even when it doesn't need it LOL!

Yup. Get a better line that is more practical when you build your own...costs less, too. Truck stop lines are PVC, which might be OK in the summer, but become a hassle in the winter. Build your own with rubber or a hybrid line that remains flexible. Use quick-connects on the ends instead of just a glad hand and air chuck, that way you can plug into your air tank (as opposed to always having to pop the red valve, unhook the red line, hook up the air line, and press the red valve again)...and the quick-connect on the other end allows you to use ANY air tool, instead of carrying that hose simply to inflate tires.

But then again, back then you never left the house to do a run without at least a roll of dimes. Because thats what the pay phones used. Now you cant hardly find a #### phone out here

If you have a tire repair done at Loves,they were checking tread depth and inflation pressure on all tires, not that big a deal for me pulling from a yard of known trailers,but probably a bigger deal for someone pulling the same one all the time

LOL, I remember years ago I was running the NW, I stopped at a pay phone, this was before my first bag phone, remember them? and called home, my wife wasnt there but we had answering machine set to pick up on 3 rings, I leave her a message that I would call her back in a hour. Well long story short I called her about 4 hours later, she was all worried amd wanted to know if I couldn't find a pay phone, It was a pretty remote area told her I hadnt seen a porch lite in 3 hours.montanajellyman and truckon Thank this.

I agree. Not only that, but I am (somewhat) picky about who fiddles with my hose(s) too!


Boss sent me up the road to the local Loves a few months back for a bad tire on my RGN (it was gonna be several hours for our usual tire company to get to me). As the kid was finishing up with the brand new tire install I asked him to go ahead and check the pressure on the others on the trlr. He said he could, but it would be an extra charge!
Now, I do thump each and every tire every day (how I found the one down in the first place- had a piece of metal in the sidewall and slow leaked over night), but unlike those super truckers who do a perfect pre-trip every day, I only check pressure once a week....
So I look at the kid like WTF?!?! We just spent over $300 and you can't just check the psi on the others? I told him screw that. After I walked out of earshot of his boss, he came up to me and apologized. Apparently a while back they decided they were gonna charge for that, as if the prices they charge wouldn't more than cover it. He said if it would have been roadside he would have done it no problem, but they have cameras in their tire bay, and he could lose his job. Lucky for him he explained it to me, as that ended up saving his $10 tip.....
