Hey guys got a road test tommorow for a class b (straight truck) driving position at a job i really want i have a question

From my understanding all of their trucks are automatic i have never driven auto only manual in school how different is it going to be..

in school i remembered we would put the truck in gear before we push in the brake valve in is that the same in autos put it in gear (D) Drive than push in parking brakes?

And if i have to go down a long steep do i have to put the gear in L (low) or could i jus slow down enough and then use controlled braking (let speed rise 10mph then apply to safe speed repeat process till down hill)

Whoever taught you to put it in gear before supplying air to the brake system wasn't that bright, maybe don't do that.

Supply air to the system, apply the foot valve and push D.

    Yes.

And take a good look at the truck. Some straight trucks have quite a bit of overhang out back. Which means the back end will swing out OPPOSITE to your turn.

    Good luck.

If you don't understand the transmission, ask the guy testing you. If they are giving a noob a chance, that should be a reasonable question.

The same applies to other things. Is this a dump truck? Something else with pumps or hydraulics or other specialized equipment? Ask about it during the pretrip.

They don't want to see that the noob knows everything, they want to know that you can drive, you are aware of your surroundings and the space you are taking, etc. They don't want an idiot who takes out cars with the tail swing. Take some laps in the parking lot if the vehicle is very unfamiliar to you, they also don't want someone who turns too late and hits a median or oncoming traffic, or someone who turns too early and rubs tires on the curb.

Jus got done with the road test wasn't an automatic like i thought they only had thar available a class b 6speed manual stalled a few times and couldn't downshift it at all prlly got one good downshift the whole time i drove

It was very different then driving 10 speed manual class a in the class a we would let off the clutch slowly let it start to roll then apply accelerator to avoid stalling

In the class b you have to apply the accelerator while you are letting off the clutch

Also we were upshifting at 1500 rpm in school these trucks shift up at 2000

I actually like driving it just a little practice is all i need i personally think even if you were an experienceed driver throwing you in a different type of truck with different gear pattern & shifting ranges itll take you a little warmup run to get used to shifting..

It seems like this job understands that people fresh outta school need a little more practice guy that gave me my road test seemed kool and told me i could drive just shifting even tho i stalled a couple times hopefully i get a call back telling me to come in for my drug test still waiting on background check

I don't like seeing guys like you go to school , get pushed through because the school wants money and come out thinking they are a professional truck driver. Not that all of that is your fault it just provides an environment that creates a high turn over rate resulting in low wages, broken down equipment and an over-all perception that truck drivers are dangerous drivers. If some real professional driver doesn't step in and fix what he or she see's the problem with that driver then the perception is true. All along the professionalism should have been one of the top priorities right next to defensive driving.

I'm sorry "Red the Trucker" if you can not see why lagbrosdetmi made such a short to the point statement. He's telling you it takes more than just shifting or float the gears to make a driver. Even a new driver. You should know all the basics before you even attempt to drive a vehicle that has the potential to hurt other people that are sharing the road. Go Ahead now and slam me that's ok but maybe with a little hope you might try to understand what is being said and ask for a little help.
