It's the cold weather causing the filter to fill up, warm temps will reverse this. A filter that looks plugged in below freezing temps will miraculously return to normal in warmer weather....

    Bio-diesel sucks in freezing cold.

I bought a used abused MAN F2000 truck 1999. Blow black smoke, blow by, could not even pull an empty trailer. I asked my mechanics what is needed to do, he suggested fuel pump overhaul, maybe Pistons etc.
I filled the fuel filter with ATF and in minutes it was healed.Engine sound is way different and much better smoke. Is it a a complete fix! Don't know time will tell

Well, I have a good news story about ATF also. Had a 98 Volvo with an N14. Started to "cut out" under heavy load. Was just like you turned the key off, and then right back on. While running over a set of rough railroad tracks. The worst feeling you can imagine, terrible shock on the driveline. Took a couple months to cure it, was convinced it was electrical, because I'd had same symptom with bad ecm power. As a last resort, a cummins hand suggested atf. Problem went away in hours. Sticking injector, not enough lubricity in ULSD. Again, like many others have said, you have to take the info and use it wisely. My N14 was of course electronic, but no DPF to worry about. And it sure fixed what was for me a horrible problem. Looks like it fixed the guy right above too.

This will stir the pot but it is my story and I'm sticking to it. The ATF made today is a far cry from what was used 40-50 years ago. Today it is primarily a cleaner among other things. Lubricity is not a feature in today's ATF. Look on the internet for photos of injectors that have had ATF run through them. They will be fried to a crisp. Over the years I have spent a lot of money on fuel additives. In all honesty I have not tried them all but I never got any of the wonderful benefits claimed by the manufacturers. After hours and hours of research on the Cummins forums I began using 2 cycle engine oil. I have posted on here about that somewhere. I currently have a tired S60 in my W9. At 1.5 oz. of 2 cycle oil per 1 gallon of fuel I found found a significant improvement in my mpg and engine performance. For all you nay sayers my mpg is documented on my IFTA reports. The engine performance improvement is strictly subjective. Others have reported to me improvements in the way their engines ran ( 2 N-14s and 1 3406E). You can find documentation on some of what I have said in forums and manufacturers spec sheets. I firmly believe in adding 2 cycle oil to a pre-catalytic converter or dpf engine. After 2002 you are on your own. I also believe this helps with small gas engines. All of my little engines start more easily. Sorry, no scientific proof. Just try it for yourself and see.

Ok. I might give this a try. 03 Cat, but no dpf or catalytics. But just so I've got this figured out right, are you mixing that 85:1? That means if I put in 150 gallons (US) diesel, I would pour in 1.75 gallons of this oil? That seems like a lot. (1.5 oz in 128 oz of diesel).

    150 gal US x 1.5 oz/gal = 225 oz. divided by 32 oz./qt. = 7 qts. or 1.75 gal. US Yup that's right

Side note: I started at 1oz/gal and saw some change. When I bumped up to 1.5oz/gal the improvement was very noticeable. Please note: By following this procedure user consents to no recourse against the adviser. LOL

The only oil reasonably priced that I can find is 1gal US at Wally World. It is TWC-3 for marine use. I want to try everyday ordinary weed eater and chainsaw oil. I haven't found it bulk to try. Oil for marine use has met certain test requirements to use as such.

I used Lucas for years and never saw any improvement. As a matter of fact if I dig far enough I can show you testing that Lucas actually increases friction. I never tried Howes other than a bottle here or there.
