If it is a 2003 Pre Acert cat, you can have valve cover pulled and have cam, rocker arm bushing ck. for how much wear (wiggle on rocker shaft) after getting a passing dino. blow/by report you will be $ ahead even if you pass on truck.

I lived , stress on LIVED , in California for 5 + years . I don't plan on driving , commercially , into that state anymore . I live in the armpit of America , again . We have our own contradictory and backwards statutes , laws and regulations regarding pollution . Unfortunately , there is no lobby to speak loud enough for the common man who owns and operates a truck which may or may not let off a puff of black smoke from his exhaust .

I am sure you know what is metal fatigue.... or you like antiques ?slomofo Thanks this.

What do you consider an "antique" in the truck engine world?
-
I'm wondering about the metal fatigue argument. Lots of people get a second million miles out of an inframe. If it were a huge problem people would be #####ing about it like DPF's.
rogueunh Thanks this. -
I'd bet the ranch on getting more miles out an overhauled pre-emission engine than one loaded up with egr, def, dpf, scr......
There's a reason there are boatloads of used ("modern") trucks for sale with 400-500k miles on them, with a fresh overhaul! -
I guess it's my reluctance to embrace change but there was a 3 or 4 year period when newer iron was dreadful . I imagine technology has gotten better and the engineers have gotten most of the kinks out .
I drove a DD15 equipped 2014 Cascadia for a friend earlier this year while he took some time off . That instrument panel lit up like a Christmas tree . Everyday . Luckily , it's still under warranty . I didn't have the stones to question his purchase decision . To each , his ownLast edited: Sep 8, 2015

cracked Cummins blocks and crankshafts, cracked detroits crankshafts, cracked Cat heads. After 2 million rears can go bad, transmission too.. DPF issues are little problems compared to this. if you think DPF is bigger problem you can get it deleted. Cracked isx block will cost you big money.
cracked crankshaft- clear metal fatigue

Yep transmissions and rears are 2 million+ mile components if maintained. I think a crank shaft if the damper gets replaced periodically probably should be. Cracked CAT heads are a design flaw not metal fatigue. It all comes down to preventative maintenence. I have a buddy who got rid of a 2009 Volvo that can show you several $8,000 - $9,000 - $15,000 and $17,000 shop bills over DPF emissions components that never did work right.
