I was wondering if there are any laws on the books about DOT officers shaking down drivers who are off-duty in rest areas. If not, are there any lawmakers who'd be interested in taking up the torch?

I saw a lot of that going on in Ohio recently. I passed three rest areas which had inspections going. I think it's a bad practice. It discourages people from using rest areas to begin with. Add, it's a cheap trick. I can agree with an officer following a truck into a rest area to deal with a moving violation, but not, *knock-knock* "Surprise! Inspection!"

People go into rest areas to get off the road. Maybe you're tired, or you need to take a 30. Maybe you have an important phone call or need the restroom. Maybe you need to check your tarps and straps. If you're stopped and off-duty in a rest area, you shouldn't be subject to inspections. You're off-duty.

The DOT already has weigh stations and roadside inspections. They really don't need to roust the rest areas, too.

Sure they wouldn't mind to do a level 1 when you go on duty.

Certain rest areas double as inspection stations.
When they are open for inspections everyone is routed through them. It is not random, and they don't come pounding at your door if you are shut down.

That is not to say that you won't be pulled for an inspection when you start rolling out, so make sure you do a proper pre-trip.
