I live in CT and pass that scale almost daily. There have been multiple occasions where The sign before exit 2 saying scale open is not lit up so I've stayed in the middle lane cruising along only to find the green lights on at the scale and the scale open. They've pulled me over a few times, I showed them my dash cam and they never gave me a ticket for it. They did give me a level 1 once.

Interesting. That may very well have been what happened to the OP here.

You'd think if there's this issue with the advisory sign they would get that fixed pronto.

It's been like that for at least 2 years now. I don't know if it's the sign that has an issue or something else but it's gotten to the point that I just stick to the right lane no matter what the sign says.

in any event, the o/p still got the ticket. the price/fine i quoted in an earlier posting was the fines back then, just before 2005 when i left that job. it has to be much higher now, i'd only surmise as such.

i too have seen the highway sign off, but the scale house light was still green. (at the shack at the entrance)

when ever i would see the highway sign off, i'd get on up the road.

even though the o/p never indulged as to how he got the ticket, i gotta be of the thinking the highway sign was indeed turned on.

You can always ride in the left lane next to a truck that got prepass... out of sight, out of mind...

While I agree with Mack E-6 about never a dumb question here, I feel very strongly about "missing a scale". Like I said before, I'm sorry, NOTHING should make you miss a scale. For me, a scale was THE most important part of trucking ( rarely had a truck that would go over the speed limit, so that wasn't an issue where the cops were at) and based my trips on that fact. Of the many times I went around a scale, I don't ever remember being dragged back ( but I'd go WAY out of my way, and not the most obvious way) I'd never rip on someone for asking any question, but this, to me, is the "Cardinal Sin" of trucking. Also, it was debated what to do when a ramp is full out onto the road, and I was told, as a safety issue, it was ok to bypass the scale, as it may take the cops a while to notice that and not change the sign, but they always did, eventually. Now, the other issue, is when they DO close the scale, if you are in line and stopped, you must enter, ( at least in Wis.) as I've seen them close the scale, and everybody goes for it, ( before the point of no return) and that causes a lot of problems too.
