there is this thing about not too much time off between end of school and going to work too
some guys have gone to get licenses then never drove for a year
only to find they were not hireable by most companies
it is all insurance driven
reality is driving schools only teach you enough to get a license
a year or 2 after you are driving you realize your always learning
and you scare yourself thinking how you got by the first few months without killing yourself
common sense is pretty important and in short supply in the industry

Yes Cranky I have read about that before , I was thinking about just getting my cdl when I was in the states and it was handy for me and that way I would have it when I am ready but then I read where most places will hire students with a cdl that are recent graduates. So I need to make sure that when I am ready to just plan on going to school then.

Dennisroc I was Already Confident about my driving before I came here Ive been driving locally since I got my license back in January drove 48 and 53 foot dry van trailers for a water company for a couple months an then drove A low boy a Couple times a month an the rest of the time a 10wheel dump truck with a tag along trailer for a Paving Company loading, unloading and delivering Heavy equipment to an from Job sites for since the end of April before I came here

So Can anyone Shed some light on my soon to be journey before I get my own Company truck? My Trainer said they sent him by plane to Florida for a recovery of a T680 an in a Hotel room in Orlando then he went to the truck drove to a Shipper an sat for two days before he got a Load then delivered the load to Fort Worth an then had to bobtail to the yard in Olathe,KS Where he was then assigned his company truck

Pete brought up a good point about timing, dennisroc.It seems as if everything in this country is insurance driven now. Too much of a gap even between driving jobs can also be a problem because of insurance. Many of the CDL schools also offer what they call a refresher course as a solution to that problem. It is really nothing more than satisfying the insurance requirements of different companies. It used to cost about $1500 to go through for several days of "retraining".

jdmredneck, some of us were issued a truck once back at the yard and some were sent out on recoveries of abandoned lease trucks. It really depends on what is going on with TransAm at any given time, every class has been different. Florida and Texas, in our opinion, were always difficult to get a backhaul out of.....so waiting for a load out of Florida wouldn't be unusual.

I recovered 8-10 trucks and always had my pic of where to go to get them

Did you have a choice because you were a lease driver whose truck was in for repairs? I don't know if a company driver would have the same choice.......but if you do have to recover a truck, jdmredneck, and you are given a choice of locations, try to choose a good freight lane.jdmredneck33 Thanks this.

but yes a lease driver would get more choice
i got along real well with the guy in charge of the DM's who assigned retrievals . I hope that was because he respected my thoughts but he was 5'5" so maybe he was just skeeredbigred81, dennisroc, Panhandle flash and 1 other person Thank this. -
Hey! I know that guy! He was skeered of me too!
That may have had something to do with the King telling him that I was not happy and I was on my way to Olathe to have a ....ummmm....conversation with him. That was when they kept the King out 3 days past his 2 week notice.
