Before the Civil War, when North and South Carolina were one "Carolina", the captial (and only populated city) was named after one of the Native American chiefs who helped the first settlers win Virginia, Chief Kacalaky. The captial was on the border of North/South Carolina, so today they both use the name Kacalacky.
