One of my last things to do is get apportioned plates. I am located in Tx but plan to run the upper 48 states. I lease my trailer and called them to see what documentation I needed for the trailer plates but she told me Apportion plates do not go on the trailer just the truck. Is that correct?

Do you know how much the plates might run?? I read they decide how much to charge by the states and miles I travel but I haven't traveled any where yet.

They'll go on estimated miles. Your first plate will be $1200-1600 or so.

Apportioned plates go on the power unit. Trailers usually have "permanent" plates (though California defines "permanent" as 5 years).

Each state charges a different amount for a commercial license plate. Texas might charge $1800, New Mexico $1600, Arizona $1700, California $2300, etc.

Apportioning just takes the miles you drove in each state, divides it by the total miles you drove, and then assigns that percentage to each state's fee.

So if you drove 100,000 miles total and 25,000 miles in each of the above states, your apportioned plate would cost 25% of $1800 (Texas), 25% of $1600 (NM), 25% of $1700 (AZ), and 25% of $2300 (CA) for a total of $1850.

Your first year they just use estimated miles...
