compared to working for USA Truck driving 800 miles per week @ .24 cents per mile, Driving for Yellow Freight as a teamster @ 2000 miles per week @ .40 cents per mile might be a step in the right direction possibly

I honestly don't know where the drama comes from. I'm guessing these LTL companies must play a huge roll in the drama by trying to climb the list and yatta yatta yatta.
You want a good drama free Union job you get on with a company that pulls OTR/Regional/Local. How do you do that? Find a tank hauler teamster division. I have yet to find any drama.
Pays good. Family benefits are amazing. The ways you get paid are immaculate. Pension should be good seeing I'm not in the central states category.
That's all I can say from my point of view.MidwestResident, Pintlehook and rabbiporkchop Thank this. -
Ok guys, here's my take on it. Why would you want to pay dues for the privelege of having another layer of people telling you what or what not to do? We already have to deal with management and government, so I don't think a union layer is beneficial

I'm not pro union and I'm not anti union. All I know is what I have seen and witnessed over the years. I saw things during the UPS strike in the late 90s that turned my stomach, things that to this day I refuse to speak of. Back in my drive a way days I had a bullet shot over my head during a strike at the Springfield Ohio International plant. However I've also noticed the better behaved drivers on the roads seem to be the union guys. Would I drive for a company that's unionized? No I wouldn't. But I respect those that do.

I've been a Teamster for a majority of my trucking career and the union has NEVER told me what to do. A Collective Bargaining Agreement is a binding legal document that's signed by the company and the membership. Should the company violate that agreement, the union CAN be called upon to enforce the contract (arbitration), but I've rarely seen that.
And I'll gladly pay $70 and change a month for my free, zero deductible health insurance. I'm also not part of the NMFA, so my company offers a 401 (k) in addition to the pension.
I've said it before, to each his own. I'm happy with my job and I hope others are also. Just offering my point of view.Toomanybikes, Cali kid and Canned Spam Thank this. -
Having protection from stupidity for one, from a company trying to pass their losses to drivers, to actual have some input in the deal, better (usually free) benefits, pensions, discounts on a long list of stuff outside of work the lists go on and on. Then theirs that little thing called overtime that most drivers never see, let alone after 40hrs a week, and never 8/hr a day outside of union shops. You get WAY more back than the small amount you spend on dues.MidwestResident and Cali kid Thank this.

When you are accustomed to flipping burgers at McDonalds for minimum wage, the idea of making 20 bucks an hour at 40 hours a week and giving up 50 bucks a week in union dues would seem like a huge step in the right direction.

Union membership can be summed up like this:
United you bargain,
Divided you beg.
Which do you want to do?Chewbongka Thanks this.
