My husband is TRYING to become an O/O, but there seems to be so many barriers. I thought getting the truck would be the biggest problem, but it's not. He can take possession of his new $130K truck at anytime now. The problem is we can't find anyone who would work with us on getting a dry van. We both have credit scores between 650 - 675 and we are able to make a reasonable down payment. The problems we've been running into is: lots of $$$$ for used trailers, ex: 2004 Wabash, $13 - $16K. Most of the trailers we have looked at has lots of rust, you can see daylight through the roof with the doors shut, poor wood flooring, oh too much stuff to name...and then these companies want 40% - 50% down. What's wrong with this picture. If we put this much money down, we could just take that money and purchase a trailer outright. How is it that we can get approved for new truck, but can get a $20K decent trailer? This is what's frustrating. Can anyone please point me in the right direction to get a reasonable DOT certified dry van? My husband and I can't keep taking hard inquiry hits to our credit. I am at my wits end. Please help! Thanks!

Those dings to the credit sucks hard.
Maybe lease a trailer? Just to get going. That's what I'd do -
Pull someone elses trailer until you get some cash saved.
Farm2Fleet can probably use you.
Friend of mine bought a 53' dry van at a farm auction for a couple thousand dollars. Put some decent used tires on it and it passed DOT inspection.
Like you, he was looking for a used dry van that he could afford and saw that one in the paper listed as farm equipment at a farm auction. He said no one was really interested in bidding on it because they were more interested in real farm equipment.Straight Stacks and Cottonmouth85 Thank this. -
Like the others said you have a truck so find a carrier with trailers that need power only units. Save up and then you can get that pretty 2016 and get alot more out of it

I sold a 2005 for $9,000 a year ago. I saw the same sort of high prices you saw on used trailers but no-one was interested in mine when I had it priced like that. I don't believe they are selling for that in the real world but even so I think you're better off buying brand new. But I hope you folks have some dependable work lined up for this venture. Otherwise you're going to go under really fast if your plan consists of booking loads off load board freight with shiny new equipment & MC#.

Don't lease a trailer. Lots of companies will give you trailer if you will work with them.
