I'm thinking about buying a truck or two and hiring drivers to run them. Can someone tell me how hard is it to get a contract with a company, how much are insurance premiums, what's the pay structure like, what to look for when purchasing a used truck, do I need to purchase trailers too etc....

Do a little searching. These questions are asked multiple times a day.

In all reality if you have to ask the most basic of the basic questions, find something else to do

Stay away, you will go broke. The market is terrible right now, it is hard for those of us that know what we are doing. For a newb to try and do it right now would be just asking to go bankrupt. Trust me the finance vultures will loan you the money with 15% - 20% down. Be prepared because you have no experience to pay twice as much for your insurance as the rest of us do roughly around $18,000 per unit from Progressive for you. Good luck attracting quality drivers when you are the new kid on the block. If you have money to burn just go buy you a Powerball ticket, you will have better luck with that vs getting into trucking and you don't know what the heck you are doing. That is all we need right now more guys like yourself that will erode these wonderful $1.35 per mile rates down to .96 per mile. I realize that I am being harsh to you, but I had a guy call the other day asking almost the same questions, and even asked me if I would finance the trucks for him. Look bud, I started my business with my own money, and studied and ran my own rig before I purchased more. The best recommendation that I can make is for you to get your butt in the seat first, buy your own truck and trailer, learn how to do it from behind the wheel before you start doing it with a computer. If you do it the other way, your drivers will never respect you, and will be able to BS you and bankrupt you.rholl32 Thanks this.

I don't mean any disrespect, but did you come out of the womb knowing how to run a business? Someone taught you what you know, whether it be family, people along your journey, or friends. You didn't instantly come into the knowledge you have.

These disrespectful guys are the same one who will block you in at a fuel pump so they can go stink up their bathroom and leave their ball filth on the toilet seat. I went to school with a guy in Charlotte who drove OTR as a company driver for a month before he bought his own truck and trailer from Schenider. He's doing extremely well right now. He's got his own authority, booking his own loads -- doing it all by himself with less than a month of actual trucking experience. It doesn't take someone to carry a thermos and wear flannel to know how to run a trucking business. The fact is, business is business. It doesn't matter if it's trucking, manufacturing, or retail. It only helps the drivers of a company for the owner to have experience behind the wheel.
