It just depends on the situation. BigRich, your buddy is probably surviving cuz he's a one truck show and therefore knows and controls the costs of running his operation.
The OPs question was slightly different in a 'buy some trucks, hire some drivers, make bank' kinda way.
That's a completely different scenario.

Running multiple truck is merely a matter of balancing the numbers. The only difference between one truck and three are wages. Taxes are tripled (if not more. #### government.). Insurance is tripled. Fuel costs are tripled. And taking an average of the miles you ran solo, you can get a rough estimate of revenue coming in from other trucks. Balance in the wages of other drivers, and you'll know whether or not you're succeeding or hemorrhaging. Then there's the option of having owner operators work under your authority. Merely cut them in on the revenue, and they pay all the fees associated with the truck. My buddy wanted me to drive his second truck, splitting everything down the middle.

Drivers would make or break this arrangement....
And how big a percentage would these owner ops receive? -
Well he did give the OP some sound advice. This is a topic that's being covered on a daily basis. Just look in the OO section every other post is about somebody wanting to buy a truck/trucks with out driving them and get into this business without any known knowledge. They heard you can make $250k per truck and they're all inwhoopNride, Cottonmouth85 and MJ1657 Thank this.

No I pointed out that there is a search function and that the questions the op asked are asked daily on this site.
If the op wants to spend the time to learn they have literally thousands of posts to read through to get answers to everything they asked. That doesn't mean they can't ask just like they did its just another option.
Try again.TaylorMade407 Thanks this. -
I always laugh when anyone tries to explain how clear cut it is just a math game. Never, ever figure on the human element or just how hard it is to find and keep good, dependable drivers. They can never tell you how a startup could even begin to compete with larger carriers in benefits and pay. They've never actually run a company but they know the numbers and can tell you how easy it is to add trucks. Hahaha!JasonF, Cottonmouth85, 04 LowMax and 3 others Thank this.

It is hilarious Rollin, the math is the easy part, so easy a fifth grader could almost do it. Now the real world day to day BS, that's a different story.
