The clutch and flywheel are out. The clutch was still good but was maybe 99% used up. It took one guy 4 hours to do it with the help of another guy the last hour. There were some broken springs. The major culprit was that broken piece in the 3rd pic. It goes right there but you can't see it. You can see where it was spinning around and scratching the metal. That accounts for the clutch working some times and some times not. The flywheel goes out for refinishing today.

And....If anyone is curious about those front steers. They are VERY aggressive tread. Just had them put on for the winter. In the Spring they will go on the trailer and new steers put on. I did this a few years ago. Was very impressed by the handling in snow which I do a lot of driving in.
truckon Thanks this. -
Flywheel resurfaced. $75.00

My clutch did the same thing in canada with a full load about 8 years ago. Learned to float gears that night. Never touched the clutch or stopped in 600 miles, and then the clutch magically started working when it was time to back up on the unloading ramp at the customer.
Sometimes it's better to be lucky, than good. -
how's the mpg ?

So it was a spring just like we said! I would have put money on it.

Not really. It was that big piece of metal getting wedged and preventing the clutch from pulling away from the flywheel. That piece is pretty big. Maybe 4" long and 1/4" tall.truckon Thanks this.

Was that part of the clutch plate in the pic? I was wondering how it managed to break off. Seems unusual for something to break off like that. Anyway at least you managed to drive home, there's nothing worse than fixing a major job a long way from base.

There was a few pieces of spring in there also. Maybe they got hung up and broke it off. Not sure. That explains why sometimes the clutch would work fine and sometimes not at all. Of course it worked fine once I got home.
I can't believe all the special jacks he has. The one the flywheel is mounted on in the picture is just for taking it out and putting it back in straight. It has all sorts of adjustments.
The flywheel surface machine was pretty cool to watch. The flywheel sits flat and this spinning cone made of stone and diamond chips cuts it.
I look back on my clutch and for like a week it was slipping mostly when I was empty going up a hill and the RPM's got up there. Then it stopped and never happened again. Not sure if that was the start of my problemsOzdriver Thanks this. -
And for the life of me I can't see how someone figured out how to make this clutch work!!! The guy must have been smoking pot. I also can't see how these pads pushing against the flywheel plate under such heavy torque can work without slipping all the time. Maybe I should smoke a fatty.
