I am considering taking a dedicated run from Detroit to Douglas AZ. I'm wondering how often I-40 down due to weather. (hopefully from someone the runs this interstate often,) thanks.
Trying to find out how often does I-40 close in new mexico?

Mother Nature has control of that, there are no regularly scheduled shutdowns. Get a crystal ball, you will be okay

I ran that on a weekly basis for a couple of years. It only closed once for high winds between Flagstaff and Winslow and once for a blizzard from Kingston to Winslow. I like the run.
In winter from LA to Chicago it is preferable I-40 than I-70 or I-80. More miles, but extremely rare to ever have to chain and gentle grades.Cw5110, garwells, blairandgretchen and 2 others Thank this. -
It will close just a few times a year normally do to ice. All and all its a good run.

Yeah it can happen but is pretty rare. Lets face it, road closures weather related DO happen. Interstate highways get top preference to keep open.

ran 80 from green bay to la 3 times a month for 2 years
never chained only shut down once so ran down thru KS to Tucumcari out 40 -
Imho....youll have better luck if you run from The Motor to Bright Lites than down 35....to 50-61-54 to Tucumcari.....Lil shorter...no tolls and I've had Way more Winter time backups and problems on 44 in Mo&Ok....than I've ever had in Nm&Az....but winters winter......good luck....

It seems like when they do close it they won't open it again until it's safe enough for cruise controll...

Listen to this man, he has forgotten more about this business than most drivers know combined.

Thanks for the info guys. Gonna check it out. I've been hauling 40k lbs running 77, Detroit to Statesville NC 3x's a week. My old Pete is telling me she don't like it much anymore. The run to AZ is all plastic. Under 10k. Easy on the truck, not so much fun in the wind.
