I have a cobra 25 NW ST and a Midland 5001z. The midland works very well with both its stock mic and a cobra power mic. If I use the Cobra 25's stock mic on the midland, the transmitted audio is virtually inaudible due to it being extremely quiet.
Now for the my problem. The cobra 25 only likes the cobra power mic. With its own stock mic, audio is just as quiet as on the midland. When I use the midland's stock mic on the cobra, it really squeals on TX. I've eliminated antenna issues. Also, the mic works very well on the other radio. What makes the cobra so picky with mics?

PS: Even with the power mic on max and the mic gain set to max, there is no squeal. But the midland mic squeals before it provides acceptable audio levels.

Volume, sometimes if you have it set all the way up it will squeal.

I'm trying to remember the cobra 25. Does it have a mic gain knob on it? Sounds like it needs to be turned down.

Was this radio ever opened up by a cb shop? May need to be adjusted.

The cobra 25 does have a mic gain control (dynamic). I'll lower that. I did have it serviced to clean the volume potentiometer and align it. The mic issue was always a characteristic of this radio, before and after service. My tech said he didn't have this problem, so maybe I need to be more careful with the mic gain after all.

One other thing, if your radio has the "talkback" feature, the gain or volume for it may be too high. If you have an adjustment for talkback, try turning it down. If not, try moving the mic and the radio further apart and see if that helps. If that isn't practical, you might plug in an external speaker and move it away from the mic to see if there is improvement in the situation.

    Good luck!

No talkback installed. I'm wondering-- might this have to do with the midland being an electret mic and the cobra uses a dynamic? Or should they all be interchangeable?

I'm not sure if Midlands and Cobras are supposed to be interchangable or not. I haven't run a Midland in almost thirty years. Most anything is possible with modern electronics.

Anyone with experience here care to chime in?

the mics should be interchangeable. If it's a four pin connector all CBs should be interchangeable. Once you get into ham radios they may be different. you can check the wiring diagrams on cbtricks.com to check for differences.
