BACK ON TOPIC, an interesting question would be how long do new entrants have to comply? Many of the companies in Chicagoland change names and DOT numbers when they're caught. Would they need to equip trucks with ELD before given a USDOT number?

Once the final rule on this gets published, according to the FMCSA, everyone must comply within 2 years. There will be a cutoff date and everyone at that point, new DOT number or not, will have to use ELD's. All established companies and all new companies.

Once it's in the regs, I'd expect a new carrier would have to be compliant on day 1. When the time came for the new entrant audit, they'd need to show proof of that. I'd expect the implementation period would only apply to existing carriers having to make a change, unless that period was defined as a general deadline for all carriers.

Yeah but after that. Let's say XYZ Trucking starts up after the mandate. How long would they have to comply with it? Would they be required at startup to have them?

    I fall into those categories.

It's funny, were ready to be a straight Jesse James outlaw super trucking cowboy company. No gps or tracking in trucks. We stay off toll road best we can. Fuel maybe every three days. But I'm so legal on paper here I get bored drawing my lines. Thank heavens for a company that loves their drivers. Hell, I wasn't this legal at my last company with peoplenet.

Just today was 235 miles. 10 hours of "on duty" time total. I sat more than @Cottonmouth85 "second" seat.

But this company legal and all will still pay the price. Tisk tisk.

I should hope so. Just because you're a new entrant doesn't let you skirt the current regs. Compliance is expected on day 1 and I hope it stays that way. Of course if they leave a loophole and don't make it harder to get authority were gonna see dot numbers in the 10 million range after this takes effect.

And like @FatDaddy said, it doesn't matter how sneaky you think you're being now. They'll find out if you screw up bad enough.
