I used 6x6 blocks and fought like hell to crank up 42k lb trailer. Took some work, but I got back out, lowered trailer, and remind hooked. Man that was embarrassing

Common sense and intelligence or mechanical aptitude sometimes don't exist side by side. ;)

I removed the ac condenser on a volvo with a pair of baby vice grips and a metric motorcycle wrench awhile back.
No nuts were rounded off either. Did I pass? l o l

Well, when I hire someone I make sure they know the basics on how to change to extra parts I keep on each truck. Such as glad hand, hoses, 7way plug. How to temporary fix a broken leveling valve.

I always do a little road test and take a close look at how they hook and unhook from a trailer.

Learned from the past... I had some call me at 2 in the morning for a broken service brake line, someone do a whole 700 km run with a broken leveling valve(no air at all in suspension !!!)

I also have so bright ones, brake pedal stuck to the floor while doing brake test, the guy figured dirt was stuck in the pedal cylinder. Put some oil in it and pumped it. Voilà!

    truckon Thanks this.

I grew up in a shop...mechanical ability in everyone varies but seems to me a little common knowledge goes a long way.

Hard Knocks University. They have the best teachers. It's at the intersection of HandsDirty & DoItYourself.... conveniently located on the side of the road. ;)

If there is a problem, don't dive into it head first. Use your brain. Options, what ifs and the most important Plan B.

    Cottonmouth85 and truckon Thank this.
