I work for a small carrier in maine, driving is not my primary function but I do some driving and need to be able to drive on an as needed basis. I typically am within the 100 mile exemption, but because it is interstate freight and I am over the threshold of 9 days per month I run a full log, paper logs here still.
My question is if I were to volunteer with the local fire department is that considered logable hours? I believe they are paid a stipend at the end of the year, so I think it would be but was looking for any one that has encountered this situation. Thanks

I know after some fires I was pretty wiped out and would be in no condition to drive so common sense is required. Now whether I logged it or not? I plead the 5th.

I don't know about the fire department, but if you run within 100 air miles you do not need a logbook regardless of if it is interstate or intrastate.brianw123 and Canned Spam Thank this.

Just remember that in the case of an accident its gonna be real easy for lawyers to find out that had another job and were not logging it. Then your in hot water.
brianw123 and Canned Spam Thank this. -
They consider any secondary job to be logged on line 4. On Duty/Not Driving.

I think the key here is VOLUNTEER fire department. Is volunteering considered a job? I don't know.truckon, brianw123, Canned Spam and 1 other person Thank this.

Find out if they indeed pay you a "stipend" at the end of the year. If they do, it is considered compensation for work performed. And that would require you to log your time volunteering as On Duty (if you're required to fill out a log book at all).
Stipend - a fixed regular sum paid as a salary or allowance.Tonythetruckerdude and brianw123 Thank this. -
Compensated work must be logged... if the work is voluntary then It is not logged
