Exactly! It's not rocket science. You could train a monkey to do it.
EDIT: No actually you cannot I guess as there would already be plenty of monkeys driving trucks.Canned Spam Thanks this. -
So, are you on the hook with this company for your cdl school? If not, I would suggest looking at other companies. Even the mega carriers with all of their faults are not likely to "throw you to the wolves" that quick. You need to do some research on companies that train new drivers. There is a ton of information on this sight alone. Even if you have a tab for cdl scholl, another training company might help pick it up, at least part of it.
For those that know a bit more about the training companies that might help him out. Any suggestions? Remember this, everyone has their personal amount of natural ability, yours may be more or less than the op's. He seems to think they have him in over his head. Personally, I think that is red flag enough to help him find a better path to learn driving an 80,000 truck. -
This is just nonsense, as is the post preceding it.
Drivers who've got 100k miles or more under their belt get into a lot fewer incidents than drivers with 2k. That's an unarguable fact. And it's a fact because driving a 70'-long + semi truck is a VERY different skill than driving a car. Like any other skill, it takes time and practice to learn.
And, since you seem to be an experienced friver, you should know that DRIVING is the least part of being truck driver.
Trip-planning, judgement, managing HOS, getting loads where they need to get on-time and without incident, customer service, etc. etc. is a whole other set of skills.
No, it's not rocket science. But it's also not working at Mickey D's. It's a skilled trade. Like any trade, it takes time to learn. I'm proud of what I do. It's an important job without which, the entire country would cease to function in days.
And if it was THAT easy, why are so many companies stupid enough to pay me $60k+ per year to do it? Last time I checked, "trained monkey" jobs pay minimum wage.scottlav46, Rugerfan, White_Knuckle_Newbie and 3 others Thank this. -
where has anyone found 1 week training? as the shortest training I have seen was transam at 11 days
-
TMC will pick up tuition even if you went to another company first.
-
you dont need a trainer to tell you, your bigger, slower, and need more room to turn & stop,do you ?Canned Spam Thanks this.

exactly and I am guessing the op company is automatics as many of the quick turn companies are going to auto fleets
-
There are some out there who will give you 3 DAYS training right out of school. You don't want to work for them, but they're out there. Others will just put you in a truck. I don't get it, cause it's gonna hurt them, but they do it.

Well, actually I DID need a trainer to teach me how to tarp a load, how to strap and chain a load, and how to driver better than a bottom-feeder trainee drives.
I DID need a trainer to teach me skills in city traffic on narrow roads, how to shift on steep upgrades (9%+) how to deal with a lousy dispatcher and how to keep my HOS straight.
In other words, I NEEDED 5k miles or so with an experienced person watching over me to correct the mistakes I was making right out of school and encourage me where I already had it right.
Of course I realize that this must make me some sub-human fool in YOUR eyes, but frankly, I don't care about your opinion. I'm a good, solid, reliable, professional driver.
I'm proud of that. And yes, I can think of half a dozen backing scenarios where I thank my lucky stars I had already had someone who knew WTF they were doing (unlike me fresh out of CDL school) looking over my shoulder and TEACHING me stuff I did NOT learn in school. But I guess I must just be stupid that way.RLCCLR, Riffman, scottlav46 and 5 others Thank this.
