I am in the process of exploring trucking as a second career and have been doing research in that regard. As I explore various companies and aspects of the industry, the information is somewhat difficult to keep up with. To help organize my research I am creating a spreadsheet that will help me to evaluate and compare companies, etc. I suspect this could be helpful to others also. (@Chinatown may already have such a list. If so, please share.)
For those of you who have already been down this road, what are the "essential" things that a potential new driver should consider when evaluating potential employers? Below are a few things I've considered, but I felt that some of you would have helpful suggestions I may not be considering. For certain things, such as driver facing cameras, I am not so much interested in the subjective debate on whether it is "good" or not. This is intended to simply be an information gathering tool.
Here is what I have thus far. This has been updated based on feedback in posts that follow. Please feel free to make additional suggestions. I will upload the spreadsheet file, but I will allow some time for additional feedback first.

I notice that you already have a heading titled "Equipment" and I think it would be helpful to be a little more specific in regards to that topic, so I would add a subsection that includes the following:
Average age of equipment.
Type of transmission - auto, 9-speed, 10-speed, 13-speed, etc.
Do they use EZ Pass, or other similar systems?
What their policy is as far as tolls. Do you pay out of pocket? If so, how long to be reimbursed.
Average length of haul?
Hazmat endorsement or TWIC card required?
Paper or electronic logs?farmboy73 Thanks this. -
@IronWeasel80 this is exactly the type of feedback I am looking for. Thanks for your help.
(Original list has been updated with these suggestions.) -
Important to some: Pet Policy
farmboy73 Thanks this. -
Hiring Area
Does CPM pay include per-diem
Do they charge "administrative" costs if they pay per-diem
Do they offer refreshers
Amenities *in* the truck such as fridge, TV mount, satellite radio
Idle policy
How many days off before needing to clean out truck
Urine or Hair drug test
Do they offer (push) sleep studies/CPAP
Physical requirements, such as weights to be lifted, BMI, blood pressure, etc
Would be very interested in a spread sheet if available. Maybe ask the powers that be to sticky it, save alot of people asking same questions about the same companies.farmboy73 Thanks this. -
Good points. Thanks for your help. Can you please clarify the above in bold? I am not sure exactly what you mean.
As far as the spreadsheet, my intention is to build a skeleton as opposed to gathering the specific information for all of the companies. I will use it personally to gather and compare information on the companies I am evaluating. I just felt that a tool that consolidates relevant questions or considerations would be helpful to me and perhaps also to those of us exploring the industry or to those considering a company change. I assume that many of the questions regarding specific companies can be answered by using the search function here. However, since things change some of the information will change with time. (That is a challenge I am having as I research here. Some of the information appears to be quite outdated.) I am open to suggestions on how this can be more helpful. -
I like the idea @Redtwin had about a spreadsheet. Not filled in, mind you @farmboy73, simply a blank slate spreadsheet to be used in measuring criteria.
I'd click it, and thank you kindly for it.farmboy73 Thanks this. -
great post. I have started something similar for my own use.
a couple things you could add.
all team or solo avail
different type trailers available or all one (van, reefer, flat)
All co drivers or O/O and lease op
the pet one above seems to pop up a lot
passport/ TWIC required
New York
Live load/unload or drop hook -
I'll expand on "how many days before truck cleanout" a bit for you.
Some companies will allow you two days to a week or more, depending on carrier, before they require you to clear your truck out so that it can be assigned to someone else. Most of the bigger carriers will allow you more time since they'll typically have much larger fleets than Big Bubba's Trucking in Randomtown, USA. But, like everything else, you'd have to ask to find out. Don't be surprised if a fair amount of recruiters don't know what their policy is. Fleet managers or terminal managers are normally the ones to decide when a truck needs cleaned out and that policy can be pretty flexible as well. -
