Hey buddy, some of these answers made me laugh hard hahaha... $1.45 per mile is decent depending on how many miles you are guranteed to have a week.... $1.45 per mile is $2900 a week at 2000 miles driven. At that rate the company 100% will offer you a fuel surcharge. For my trucks I have calculated driving 1800 miles would cost me about $1000 not including fuel surcharge... so in other words.... owner operators will make more than drivers by about 2000$ but having the risk of breakdown repairs... as for a driver just drive and shift.... no worries at all. Insurance, plates, tolls and fees should all be covered by the company running under their authorities.

If you cant make money at a $1.45 a mile as an owner/operator, regardless of FSC, Ins, etc (as long as you are averaging 2000 MPW) you are paying way to much for your truck and your own wage. JMHO though.

There's so much involved here, And I'm not going to cover whats been covered a million times already..
BUT, what I will add that is extremely important that isn't discussed much is secrecy on your settlements.
As a Leased owner-operator..Make Sure you Get a statement weekly/biweekly,monthly of every haul you perform with documentation supporting the haul from the Customer/broker.
As an owner-operater ,You should be 'Concerned' on what your moves are paying the company your leased to...Mileage pay to you or not.
I'm not a fan of Leasing equipment on to existing motor carriers because of the secrecy and "using" nature of the business. Only to make Their Customer base stronger. -
If you are bored of sitting around and you are not an owner operator, what makes you think you will have more work to do if you become a truck owner? Hint: whoever is paying you knows there are owner operators hauling for less than it would cost them to own the truck and pay the driver. Simply going out and buying a truck is not the answer.

As an o/o my costs are $1.20/mile for everything except wages. At 10,000 miles a month your plates and insurance would save you about 15cpm. Throw in the fsc and at 1.45 you could almost do as well as a company driver. Provided there are no breakdowns.
