Well, alot of people that do escorting are either retirees or people who once drove truck and liked being around big loads but couldn't/didn't want to handle the stress/responsibility. So let that sink in the next time you think you are anything more than a payday to your escorts.

But there are some good ones out there too. Most are adequate. They'll get you there but don't get them into anything too crazy or out of the norm. Then there are the rest.

 

The only escort I ever used. Was 21. Not the brightest but not dumb either. Knew what he was doing. Taught me a few things and he learned a few things. No problem getting along.

Thought about jumping in here but better bow out.

However before I do, I see a lot of people saying that at 14' wide will require 2 escorts. I'm sitting here at the end of a 1900 mile trip with a 14' wide and was not required to have a single escort the entire trip. So with that being said, take the advice given but take it as advice not law, you'll learn a lot here but what you learn here will not be everything you need to know. Now had I followed all our other trucks and ran 30 out of Wyoming into Idaho I would have needed an escort from Cokeville to McCammon but we also have Utah annuals so for the same amount of miles, no 2 lane and no stoplights/signs I went through Utah, avoided the hassles of an escort and................I'm parked at the receiver while the other trucks are waiting on morning curfew 100 miles back down the road. Tomorrow morning I'll be empty at the yard flirting with the office girls while the rest are sitting in North Bend waiting on 9:00am so they can roll.

 

It is the same as the tools who say "You can only run from sunrise to sunset with oversize" they should really try reading a permit and provisions before they grace us with their "Knowledge".

 

I think some people are only used to running in the same area, and without thinking about the rest of the country state only what they know to be true where they run.

 

There's also actual enforcement.

For instance. In Albuquerque, 60 foot loads are supposed to have full uniform. No one enforces it though.
